This selection of great short stories by GRRM encompasses a wide range of topics.

  • With Morning Comes Mistfall: A team of scientists investigates the murders and visions seen on Wraithworld... at what cost?
  • The Second Kind of Loneliness: The psychological journey taken by a lonely operator on a far-off space rig.
  • Override: The journey of a corpse-handler.
  • Dark, Dark Were the Tunnels: Two cultures meet after a long separation in which both have gone on separate evolutionary paths.
  • The Hero: What happens to the heroes of war when they get ready for retirement?
  • fta: A very short story about hyperdrive and technology.
  • Run to Starlight: An alien species has settled on earth... and wants to join a football league.
  • The Exit to San Breta: A man has a strange experience with a haunted highway.
  • Slide Show: Can a space travelor settle once again on earth?
  • A Song for Lya: A young telepath succumbs to a chilling alien religion.

Martin explores the deepest parts of the human mind, and these science-fiction stories could just as accurately be termed horror tales from what he discovers.

This is a wonderful collection of stories by George R.R. Martin, probably the most creative author of fantasy and science fiction working today. These tales were written in the early seventies, and remind me of Philip K. Dick with emotional depth.

The strongest story is, of course, A Song for Lya. I also really liked With Morning Comes Mistfall and Dark, Dark Were the Tunnels. The weakest story was The Exit to San Breta, and the remainder were somewhere in between, although all of them were well above the average SF short story.

Thanks so much to appaloosatb for the opportunity to read this great book. I will be sending this one on to tchouli tomorrow.

What a really cool book. I did not know in advance that it was Science Fiction. I was expecting something totally different. But I liked every story except one - football, bleack!

Really cool stories, I am finding out that I like collections of short stories very much.

I enjoyed these, but am also glad that I've read Martin's later work (namely A Song of Ice and Fire) as I think he's definitely improved as a writer.

These were nominally sci-fi stories - although I completely agree with appaloosatb's comment about them also being horror stories as well - 'Override' being a good example of this and coincidentally my least favourite story.

The ones I liked best were 'The Second Kind of Loneliness' which was brilliantly ambiguous, as well as a very good study of what long-term isolation could do to someone. 'fta' I didn't 'get' at all - can someone explain this to me? Maybe I was having a blonde moment...

My favourite, however, was 'Dark, Dark Were the Tunnels' - really well thought out, creepy, intelligent and managing to reference Simon and Garfunkle! Go and listen to 'Sound of Silence' - apart from the quote mentioned in the story, there's a lot in that song which is mirrored in the story.

Thanks appaloosatb for including me on this!

On to billhookbabe when I next get to the post office.

A great collection of stories. i enjoyed A song for Lya most closely followed by Override. The one I dislike the most was Run to Starlight. it bored me so much I didn't finish it. Shame 'cause I liked the title. I love the way George R.R. Martin creates these worlds, they are so believable. Thanks appaloosatb. I have Song of Fire and Ice on my shelf, think I will read it soon.

This will go back as soon as I have an address to send it to.
