The story is told in the voice of Nomi Nickel, a sixteen year old girl in a staunchly Mennonite town in southern Manitoba. Both her mother and her older sister have fled the repressive bullying of her mother's brother who is the fiercely pious minister. Now Nomi and her father, Ray, are alone in their house out on highway twelve. Nomi's life is spinning out of control, the furniture is disappearing, and the future looks grim.

Very well written. Nomi is a strong, if not altogether likeable character. Her portrait of the town is vividly drawn with flashes of savage humor.
