amazon.com says:

The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes.

The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them "the truth." After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional--but is it more true?

had the impression the end was a little lame. to biblical for my opinion but afer all an intriguing story...

Journal Entry 3 by drutt from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, January 17, 2005
The book's arrived and I'll get straight onto it just as soon as I've finished the one I'm reading now.

I'm looking forward to it - can't believe it's not one I've picked up before (seeing how *everyone*'s read it).

I love the postcard. It'll be a nice wee surprise for everyone in the bookring.

Journal Entry 4 by drutt from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 22, 2005
At first I found it difficult to get into this book. The religious references were a little irksome and there was a really annoying error on page 16 that really ought to have been corrected -

"In theory - that is, as a simple physical possibility - an animal could pick and go, flaunting all the social conventions and boundaries proper to its species".

Once on to part 2 though, I began to really enjoy it. The descriptions were vivid and the narrative had a lovely flow. All in all, a good read.

The book is now on its way to tirppis (by air mail), sorry about the delay.

Journal Entry 5 by tirppis on Saturday, February 26, 2005
The book arrived yesterday, I'll be reading it as soon as I finish the one I'm reading now.

The postcards were a grat surprise, one from outofreach and one from drutt... I must think of getting one too.

Journal Entry 6 by tirppis on Tuesday, March 29, 2005
I had great expectations for this book, as I have read a lot of good critics about it. I think it's also because of this that the book itself was somewhat a disappointment now when I actually got to read it.

As somewhat an agnostic I found the religious side of the book annoying, even if I enjoy questioning the way things are. Otherwise the story in itself was intriging and the description was really captivating, even if somewhat a bit long sometimes. I was a little dissappointed at the end though and I think the algue-forest-part wasn't believable. In total it's a nice read.

I'll be sending the book out to tournesol73 as soon as possible.

REceive it today and have some other rings to read ahead. I usually organise things so that it won't take me longer than 4 weeks... Thanks!!!

Journal Entry 9 by QueenSissi from Queluz, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Thursday, July 7, 2005
At first sight, this didn't seem a very interesting book, but I was curious because everyone was talking about it. What could be interesting about a boy "living" with a tiger on a tiny boat? It really was interesting.

I loved the passages on religion and Gods... It does make sense and maybe that way people wouldn't attack each other such as they have today!

A lovely story about respect, life and even the passage from Childhood to Adulthood - could there be a bigger test?

Thanks! It's going to travel to ds since Vinyldoll said to be very busy :)!

Received in the mail today. It's first up after Harry Potter.

I must admit, I scimmed a lot of this book. I'm sure there was a lot of allegory I missed, but the book just didn't do much for me. I'm glad I got to read it, though. And I thought Richard Parker was a great name.

this book got lost in the mail.
ds3323 was so generous to buy a replacement copy in order to keep the ring moving.
here is the link to the new life of pi journal page...

Journal Entry 14 by amambaw from Vancouver, British Columbia Canada on Wednesday, October 5, 2005
Hello everyone!!! Well, I'm embarassed to report that Life of Pi is, in fact, safe with me. It arrived in the mail a while back but it was put into a pile of stuff in my room by one of my family members. I wasn't told I had a package, so it sat there while I panicked about where it might be.

To make a long story short, ds3233 kindly replaced the book. I now have two copies. Donnalee was very very kind and generous and has asked me to just send both books on rather than sending one copy back or sending her a trade. Thanks Donnalee!

I have already pmed pinkmanager and will wait a week to hear back from her. Hopefully, this bookring will be back on its way soon. I will keep the second copy to read rather than holding up this bookring.

Thanks again to outofreach for including me, and to ds3233 for being so understanding. Amanda

Journal Entry 15 by amambaw from Vancouver, British Columbia Canada on Friday, October 14, 2005
While I'm still reading the second copy that was sent to me, I've sent this original bookring copy on to pinkmanager in Greece. It was sent surface, so may take a few weeks to get there.

Cheers! Amanda

PS... When I finally finish this one, I'll include thoughts later on down the line. AW

Journal Entry 16 by amambaw from Vancouver, British Columbia Canada on Wednesday, October 19, 2005
I really enjoyed reading Life of Pi. I have finally finished it, and will now release the copy I received as a replacement for this ring.

When there was much discussion towards the beginning of the story about God and religion, I thought that there would be a very obvious thread in the story that explored these issues. There wasn't, but if you dig deeply, you can find evidence of each of the religions that Pi explores. I think it's interesting that Pi tells us that the color of Islam is green, and that in Islam, things are what they are, that Muslims respect the natural way of things. Funny, then, that the island Pi discovers is lush and green. No one would ever believe it existed, but for Pi it did. A comment on faith, perhaps? Hinduism takes orange as its color. Pi discusses how Hinduism is full of miracles, kings and many many Gods. Is Richard Parker a representation of this? Something that should be explored perhaps. And what is the color of Christianity? Pi never says, but I would guess it blue, like the vast ocean.

In the edition I was sent, there is a reader's guide at the end of the book with several questions to make you think further about the story. As I contemplate what to do with this book, I will consider these questions and relish Pi's story.

Thanks again to everyone who made it possible for me to read this! Cheers, Amanda

The book arrived safely in the mail today. I am looking forward to enjoying this book. I should be able to get started on it in the next day or too.

Thanks for organizing the bookring and allowing me to participate!

Journal Entry 22 by HopKnot from Scottsdale, Arizona USA on Saturday, March 4, 2006
I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure I would because I am not religous and I wsan't sure how you make living on a lifeboat with a tiger interesting. He does. Also liked learning a little about the diferent religions and how he made them compatible. I am sure there was even deeper meaning that I missed, but it was a great read.

I am PMing miss-gonewest and will send this off as soon as I hear from her.

Journal Entry 24 by miss-gonewest from Perth City, Western Australia Australia on Tuesday, May 30, 2006
This little book has finally arrived safe and sound and all the way from the other side of the world...

Alas it has to be added to the bottom of the pile as I have literally been flooded with book rings. Isn't it always the way?

I have three books in front of this, and if it looks like this will be sitting here too long, I will forward to the next reader (c-a-m) to get through before me.

Thanks to all before me for getting this book to my mailbox.

Journal Entry 25 by miss-gonewest from Perth City, Western Australia Australia on Thursday, June 29, 2006
Just an update with the book… I still have it in my possession and I also now have c-a-m’s address to post it along. The problem (albeit a very slight one) is that I think it may have accidentally been packed ready for my impending house move.

I know exactly which box it will be in, I just have to dig that box out from under the pile of other boxes.

As soon as it is located, I will have it on its way; my sincerest apologies for the confusion but rest assured Pi is safe (somewhere, in a box, in my house).

Updated 11th July - Ah ha! I have found the book! After burrowing through boxes, I have it and it will be posted today or tomorrow. Many apologies about the carry on, its been a busy/crazy few weeks!
