This is Alice Sebold's ("Lovely Bones")FIRST book. It's based on her own brutal rape, but Sebold does not exploit the obvious. There is humor, there is suspense, there is healing. Interesting that the sister in "Lovely Bones" is very similar to Alice's own sister in this story.

I just received "Lucky" and I can't wait to read it. Thank you so much KimKerry.
I just finished this book. I read Sebold's "The Lovely Bones" first. When I heard about this book I assumed it was fiction, I did not realize it was a memoir. That made the story harder to read. It is a raw account of the author's own rape as a student at Syracuse University, how she deals with the crime, her attacker, the trial and the aftermath. Her story actually reads as a work of fiction, though. I'm amazed that so much has happened to her—she is a true survivor. I can see her using her family's behavior as material for Susie's family in her second book. This book is a quick read, I didn't want to put it down. I look forward to more work from Sebold.
Received as part of a trade. Can't wait to read it and pass it on.
What a powerful book! It's amazing how the author can share such vivid details of her experience in such a candid way. I applaud her courage. The writing was fairly blunt and to the point which is something I don't usually find enjoyable in a novel, but given the story it made sense. I think "frilly" writing would have taken something away from the story and the emotion of it all. I also really liked the title of the book. Before I started the book I thought it was a bit odd, but once I read the little blurb in the beginning I got it. As the novel went on I thought the title took on a much more profound meaning.
Passing this one along as my first BookRelay book! It'll be in the mail in the next couple of days.

this was the first book i finished in 2006, and i must say that at fist i was nervous about starting it. because it is written by a popular author and i haven't really enjoyed a lot of books by popular authors lately, i didn't expect to like this very much, but i was sorely mistaken in that assumption. though the book deals with a difficult subject, sebold writes with such refreshing and frank honesty that i really found it difficult to put down. it is so well written that i actually cried at the rape scene in the beginning of the book, and crying over books is something i DON'T do.

Difficult and easy to read at the same time - difficult because of the subject matter, easy because of the style.
I had already heard of "Lovely bones" so curiosity made me bring Lucky with me. To be read soon.
