Oops! Received this on Friday, but forgot to make a journal entry for it. I have noticed that this title is in high demand at www.Cliff1976.com, so I will bump it to the top of my reading pile and pass it along.

As I reached page 200 or so if this book, I wanted to satisfy my curiosity about how much of this book was fact and how much was a product of the author's imagination. So I went to www.wikipedia.com and read some of the history of Henry XIII. I was fascinated to read about the controversy this book created by taking some positions unpopular with historians. (Personally, I just want to read a good story and I don't care if it's all true!) However, I was stunned to read some of the true-life details that seem like something out of a novel! Unfortunately, there were lots of spoilers about what might happen later in this novel.

My recommendation to others: DO read the real-life stories--but DON'T read them 'til after you finish this book!

Well, what a fascinating topic, and all the more so because at least the skeleton of the story is true! I did think it could have been 200 pages or so shorter. One chapter was very like the next in the middle there. And I can't say I was too surprised by the ending. I knew that heads were gonna roll!

A friend is borrowing this, and then it's available.

From the front cover:

The Other Boleyn Girl
A Novel by Phillippa Gregory

"Compelling... spellbinding... and almost impossible to put down."
-- Sandra Gulland, author of the Josephine Trilogy

From the back cover:

Two sisters competing for the greatest prize: the love of a king

When Mary Boleyn comes to court as an innocent girl of fourteen, she catches the eye of Henry VIII. Dazzled by the king, Mary falls in love with both her golden prince and her growing role as unofficial queen. However, she soon realizes just how much she is a pawn in her family's ambitious plots as the king's interest begins to wane and she is forced to step aside for her best friend and rival: her sister, Anne. Then Mary knows that she must defy her family and her king, and take her fate into her own hands.

A rich and compelling tale of love, sez, ambition, and intrigue, The Other Boleyn Girl introduces a woman of extraordinary determination and desire who lived at the heart of the most exciting and glamorous court in Europe and survived by following her own heart.

"Magically evokes the glory and the ruthlessness of Tudor England while exploring the love and rivalry between two sisters... Flawlessly done!"
-- Pamela Berkman, author of Her Infinite Variety

PHILIPPA GREGORY is the author of fourteen books, one of which, Wideacrew, was a New York Times bestseller. She holds a Ph.D. in eighteenth-century literature from the University of Edinburgh and lives in England.

This book's awfully thick, and therefore a little daunting... but once I picked it up I just burned right through. On Monday night, my boyfriend was out late on a work call, so I had the "oh I'll just keep reading this while waiting up for him" excuse... then of course when he finally got home I "only" had about 60 pages left, so I had to finish... at about 3AM Tuesday morning! Ouch, Tuesday dragging my butt through the work day really hurt, but this novel was sooo worth it!

I've read a fair bit of fiction and non-fiction involving Henry VIII and his six wives, so I get annoyed quickly by out-and-out historical inaccuracies, and was a little worried about the quality of the research in this. But my fears were completely unfounded, I thought Gregory's research and characterizations really excellent. Now I want to read all the books by this author! I do have The Virgin's Lover on Mt. TBR, and will probably bump it up considering how great this was. Thanks so much for granting my wish for this book, I really loved it!

I offered this book up during my 3rd BC Anniversary TBR RABCK Extravaganza, so this will be mailed off to the lucky winner ASAP.
