Thank you so much, Booknose, for this incredible looking audiobook! I just can't wait to listen to this, and it seems perfect for the dreary weather we have been having lately! Thank you so much!

Journal Entry 4 by gensparkie from Arcata, California USA on Thursday, February 10, 2005
This was a hilarious audiobook! I was absolutely in stitches. This author is like David Sedaris, only fictional, and the town felt like Mitford on crack. Highly recommended, it got me through a day of weeding in nasty, icy winds, with the occasional downpour, and I still felt cheerful at the end of the day due to this book.

I'll probably pop this in my perpetual box or RABCK a book friend with it....

Listened to part of disk 1. Found very little humor, not impressed with the beginning. It appears that these disks have not been very well cared for. I have tried 3 CD players now and I am unable to finish disk one due to extreme skipping and scanning issues. Not wanting to miss 10-15 minutes of the story I am going to give up and see if the next person on the list wants to give it a try.

I started this several times but couldn't get past the first few chapters. The humor seemed forced, and he described the community so extensively that I wanted to shout, "Get to the point!"
Anyway, thanks for letting me try this. It's packaged and ready to go--I plan to mail it to becca-mo this afternoon.

thank goodness this arrived! I could really use some comic relief in my life right now!

updated 27 Aug: I have just finished this. (my apologies, mellion) hmmmm what did I think about this one? Well, of all Moore's titles I have read ("Lamb", "Bloodsucking Fiends", "Fluke", and now this one), I think it ranks #2. However, in the big scheme of things, this title has nothing on Tom Robbins for sustained wackiness. "Angel" starts out strong but loses its wind right before the resurrection scene IMO. I would have liked more story devoted to the boy, too.

Oops! I'm so sorry. I actually received this audio almost 2 weeks ago, and I thought I had journaled it. Thanks, becca-mo, for sending it my way, and thanks to Suebo for sharing.

I read the book when it first hit the shelves. I adore Christopher Moore, and I can never wait to read a new title by him. I liked being able to listen to the story, and although I thought Tony Roberts did a decent job of narrating, it was a little odd that his accent made all the characters southern. ;-) Still, it was a fun book, and I giggled out loud more than once while listening to this on my daily commutes.

I have FifthElement's address and hope to mail this out today! Thanks.
Unabridged; 5 compact disks; 6 hours

Synopsis:
Twas the night (okay, more like the week) before Christmas, and all through Pine Cove, California, people are busy buying, wrapping, packing and generally getting into the holiday spirit.

But not everybody is feeling the joy. Little Joshua Barker is in desperate need of a holiday miracle. No, he's not on his deathbed. But Josh is sure that he saw Santa take a shovel to the head, and now the seven-year-old has only one prayer: Please, Santa, come back from the dead.

But hold on! There's an angel waiting in the wings. (Wings, get it?) It's none other than the Archangel Raziel come to Earth seeking a small child with a wish that needs granting. Unfortunately, our angel's not sporting the brightest halo in the bunch, and before you can say "Kris Kringle" he's botched his sacred mission and sent the residents of Pine Cove headlong into Christmas chaos, culminating in the most hilarious and horrifying holiday party the town has ever seen.

Only Christopher Moore, the man who brought you the outrageous lost gospel Lamb and the hysterical fish tale Fluke, could have devised a new holiday classic that tugs at the heartstrings and serves up a healthy slice of fruitcake to boot.

Christopher Moore is the author of Fluke, Lamb, Practical Demonkeeping, Coyote Blue, Bloodsucking Fiends, Island of the Sequined Love Nun, and The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove. He invites readers to e-mail him at [email protected].

Tony Roberts is a familiar face from his appearances in numerous Woody Allen and other films, and his starring roles on Broadway in Arsenic and Old Lace, Promises, Promises, and The Allergist's Wife.

Arrived yesterday and will start listening to it on my commute. This should be a fun one. =)

Journal Entry 21 by sistert from Catonsville, Maryland USA on Saturday, November 5, 2005
I just could not get into the humor of this story. From the very beginning the authors desire to describe everything as compared to something else quickly got old. Nothing was simply exciting, dark blue, or perky. Instead it was like winning a football game when you know there should be no hope, as blue as a sky right before a storm so violent you know your probably not in Kansas anymore, and like two best friends with up-turned pink noses (this last one straight from the story). GAH! Enough already.

That and everyone in town had serious issues. Not just small quirks or quirks people keep in closets. No they're right out there and truly off the wall sometimes. I have to agree with the earlier statement, it just seemed forced.

I would have given this a 1 but I liked the reader's abilities, which in some instances has killed a perfectly good story, so I gave this 2 extra points.

As for a problem with the CDs, there does seem to be something goofy with them. I caught skipping on the first one but was able to get through it. Then of course I gave up on the story by CD 2 so I don't know if the problem affects all CDs.

Contacted vannessave and will send it to her as soon as I get her address.

Journal Entry 27 by cougmax from Seattle, Washington USA on Friday, February 3, 2006
I guess somebody has to be different from the flock, and Moore is! I thought this audio was fabulous. True, it was out there, but so many phrases were lol funny that I had to keep it going. The 'narrator' in Molly's head was so hilarious, and the 'dog that talks' was side-hurting funny! The 'Warrior Babe' side comments got old and redundent, but often they seemed to set the stage for all the other craziness going on in the story.

The first cd does skip, but if you hang in there it corrects itself pretty quickly. I don't know how to clean/fix cds so I did not mess with it. All the other cds worked fine.

From Publishers Weekly
This audiobook starts off innocently enough—with a few minutes of bright, punchy Christmas music—but as we meet each resident of Pine Cove, California, the story bends, becoming as twisted as an image in a funhouse mirror. Lena Marquez is the sanest of the bunch, even if she does have a habit of wreaking violence on her ex-husband, known here as the "Evil Developer." Then there's Lena's best friend Molly, a former B-movie actress who hears voices, occasionally believes herself to be "The Warrior Babe of the Outland" and is married to the town constable, Theo, a former pot addict who's slipping off the wagon. To top that off, there's Tucker, a lonely pilot who has a Micronesian fruit bat for a pet, and a rather witless archangel named Raziel who comes to Earth to grant one boy's Christmas wish. It is that wish which turns this Christmas comedy into a holiday horror story. Roberts narrates the whole affair with skill, using his warm, hearty voice to great effect. His is the kind of voice that one would expect to hear in the audio version of A Christmas Carol or a children's storybook, which makes him the perfect reader for this book since it is, in part, a parody of the Christmas classics—albeit a gruesomely entertaining one. Whether crooning a few bars of the blues, personifying the dead or delivering one of the story's uplifting messages ("Life is messy. People generally suck"), Roberts's velvet voice rings with mirth, accentuating the humor and absurdity of each moment.

From AudioFile
Tony Roberts throws himself into the "spirit of the season" with relish and pizzazz as he reads Moore's absurd story about the residents of Pine Cove, California. Roberts is dripping with enthusiasm--and his voice is rich with the ironic humor Moore uses so generously--in telling the story of a dead Santa, a foolish archangel, a stoned cop and his crazy wife, a child's wish, and a town full of zombies. Roberts's careful rendering of each character hits the mark, bringing each person--living or dead--to life. A great match for Moore's dry wit and outlandish understatement, Roberts possesses a gift for the timing needed to pull off this wildly funny tale.

Given that its last stop took three months and I can't afford to send this to asterw in Madrid, Spain by anything other than the slow boat, I think I'll copy this into my iTunes & ship it ASAP. I'll update this journal entry once I've finished listening. Thanks so much to Suebo, cougmax, and spaceystacey for sharing this audiobook with me!

Journal Entry 33 by asterw from Athens - Αθήνα, Attica Greece on Tuesday, April 25, 2006

Thank you editorgrrl for mailing it so soon!

Update 07.06.2006: I don't think I'll be able to listen to this one. First I was waiting to buy my new car, then I never seem to be alone in the car to listen to it. And when I'm home I prefer to read books. I tried to listen to it while cleaning the house but that didn't work either. I guess I'm not into audiobooks after all!

So I've PM'ed lilmztaz to get her address and send her the audiobook
