About two weeks ago I read this book via vivdripper's ring. I loved it so much I bought it. I couldn't go on without a copy in my library.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn has become, I'm almost absolutely certain, my all-time favorite book. I now have three copies- this one, a copy I found on Charing Cross Road in London with an inscription in it from Copenhagen, Easter of 1957, and one I found in a forgotten box of beautiful old books at a garage sale in Cold Spring, MN. I actually bought that entire box for $2.50, a deal since it included treasures like 70-year-old copies of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Anne of Green Gables, not to mention a copy of Quo Vadis by Sienkiewitz from 1897. Anyway, I have decided to spread the glory that is Betty Smith by creating a ring. I want everyone to love her.

UPDATE 8/4/06--- I have just received an offer from scotsbookie, who has just started a ring for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, saying that she could take over the European leg of my ring. This is heaven-sent since I've been worried about this ring being too long. So the US participants of this ring will read my copy, and the European participants will read hers. Any questions, contact me or scotsbookie. Here is the new link:

This was a truly beautiful book. I loved the story of the Nolans, set against WWI America - Brooklyn and New York were filled with immigrants and first-born Americans - and Betty Smith created such a vivid picture of that time. Francie was the heroine, but her mother! Katherine was so strong and sensible, I felt that she was almost the more remarkable character.

I think I read the first couple of chapters and went back to see what year the book was written in. I can see how it might have had its' detractors in 1943 - frank discussions about sex, and not only in the book, but also the "how do parents discuss sex with their children" discussions. I think this would have been a little scandalous in those days. Remarkable.

Thank you so much for the ring, Czersk; I really enjoyed it.

I have PM'd keithneese for an address and will have it in the mail as soon as I hear back.
