Carcaterra's controversial memoir of growing up in NYC's Hell's Kitchen and as an inmate at a sadistic detention center was a PW bestseller for eight weeks.

Different cover, same book.
The first third of the book is about Hell's Kitchen in the 1960's, it's a beautifully written piece about New York and being a child in that environment. The middle of the book is about the experiences in the boy's center; it's disturbing and difficult reading. The last third is about redemption, revenge, and remorse. Overall it was well-written and I couldn't put it down, even though parts were horrific and explicit. I think it's worth reading.

A friend left this on a table in the lounge.
This was a quick read for me even though I thought it would take me awhile. It's a good bood...very dark at times, but worth the read. Portrays true friendship. I left this book at the Flying J Truckstop in Indianapolis, IN on 03/08/10. Gotta love Book Crossings!!!
