Jane Austen Book Club, The
13 journalers for this copy...
Six Californians join to discuss Jane Austen's novels. Over the six months they meet, marriages are tested, affairs begin, unsuitable arrangements become suitable, and love happens. With her finely sighted eye for the frailties of human behavior and her finely tuned ear for the absurdities of social intercourse, Fowler has never been wittier nor her characters more appealing. The result is a delicious dissection of modern relationships.
Can't say it was my cup of tea - but other people have loved it - so will free it from my bookshelf to find a more worthy reader :)

RELEASE NOTES:
Including this in a bookring mailout to travel where it will
I'm just about to start a bookring with my copy of this book, so I don't need to keep this one. I'll send this along with the Book Notes Journal, but now I'll be able to see what happens to this one on its travels. Hello to sally906.
Change of plan.... I'll use this one for a bookray then I'll be able to send the other copy to a non-BC friend.
Bookray instructions:
1. SIGN UP for this bookring by sending me a Private Message. Order of participants will be juggled between geography and date of request. Late additions may be added to the end of the list.
2. When the person before you on the list finishes reading the book, they will send you a Private Message for your postal address. If you are experiencing an RBC (Reading Backlog Crisis) or no longer wish to read it, let them (and me!) know and I will move you down/off the list.
3. WHEN YOU RECEIVE THE BOOK please make a journal entry so everyone knows it has safely arrived.
4. WHEN YOU FINISH THE BOOK, make another journal entry telling us what you thought - did you like it? Did you think it was well-written?
5. CONTINUE THE BOOKRING by sending a Private Message to the person after you on the bookring list and request their postal address. Please check back here for the latest distribution list. If the person doesn't respond within 7-10 days (use your judgement), please PM the next person, and then me, so I can update the bookring list.

Posted to kalasue this morning - 6/6/5.
I did enjoy reading this, and have read all the Austen books over the years, but have to say it was really just a pleasant way to pass the time. Not at all inspiring and I probably will have forgotten all about it soon... to be posted off to Tramgirl soon.
Got this in the post last night, will get to it soon after I get through the rather large book which I'm currently reading.
I'm so naughty!! I forgot to journal this book when I read it! Remembering back...I enjoyed it, it was interesting to hear about the different characters and how they related to the Jane Austen books they were reading. There didn't seem to be as much about the actual books as I expected but I still found it an enjoyable read and it has inspired me to read the Austen books mentioned (or re-read in some cases!).
This was posted to Fleebo over the weekend, sorry I had it for so long, things going on at work and home took over!

Received this morning. I'll get right into it - although the quote on the front from Alice Sebold (ugh) is offputting. Thanks!

I was in a bad mood when I started this book, and it took me probably half the book to start enjoying it. The typesetting in the first chapter angered me, the petty women annoyed me, the boring men and the lecherous boys disgusted me. But I did get over it - Grigg and Allegra, in particular, were amusing enough to pull me out of my funk. I would have done better if it had started with one of their stories, or somebody's, anybody's but Jocelyn's.
It was odd the way some of the book was written in the first person without actually specifying the narrator.
I am only moderately familiar with Austen's work - I admit that I have seen more of the movies than read the books. I would certainly never become such a fan that I could discuss them endlessly without ever daring to criticise them!
Not bad. Sending to Jensel as soon as I get an address.
This was waiting for me in the mailbox when I got home last night and I finished it at lunch today which I guess shows I enjoyed it! Great light read, particularly liked the little unannounced Austen quotes by the characters throughout.
I don't know if it would be as enjoyable for non-Austen fans although I have to say that I would never personnaly pick apart and dissect JA's books to level that the characters do here.
To me that removes the joy of great classics - they should be read just like every other book (which they are), to be enjoyed - or not - as you find them.
Sending on to Merriec. Happy trails little book.
received from Jensel. Looking forward to reading it.
I found this a really lovely book. I wish my friends dropped lines from Austen like that.
I am in Canberra for work for a couple of weeks and forgot to bring it with me so I won't be able to pass it on until the first week in November.
I apologise to everyone for the delay.
I have asked puppymummy for her address and it will be on its way as soon as I receive it.

RELEASE NOTES:
Sent to Puppymummy today thanks everyone for your patience. It was a good read!
Safely arrived, as always there are a few ahead but I am trying to read fast :)
A pleasant book, but not really outstanding. I didn't really click with the characters, but I didn't hate them either. I did enjoy the section at the end where there are the quotes from Austen's family and friends about her work.
Will be posted as soon as I receive lytteltonwitch's address.
My post office was closed between Christmas and New Year's, so the first chance I got to post it was this morning. It's off to New Zealand!
I was getting a bit worried about this book as it seemed to be taking a while to arrive. Then when I get the parcel I wonder about the contents.Big sticker on parcel saying "Delayed for compliance with Aviation Security Regulations"

RELEASE NOTES:
I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. The characters seemed quite uninteresting and flat. The discovery of the first person narrator is what kept me reading; I wanted to know who it was. The answer, however, was a disappointment too.
I'll send it out to tiatia as soon as I have the mailing address.
Off to mepwave...
I tried and tried to get into this book but everytime I put it down I couldn't get it picked up easily. Perhaps if I had more background in Jane Austen I might have enjoyed it more. Sorry for the delay.
No response yet from mepwave (second try at email contact). I'll give it awhile longer then perhaps on to the next person.

The book has been resurrected!!! Sorry I went off the grid. Right after receiving this book I ended up moving to Tanzania... and I now live in Texas so it's been traveling! I am so sorry I stalled this ray. Let's see if 6 years later RoryG still wants it. :)
