China Bayles is the detective in these mysteries. A former lawyer who now runs an herb shop in Texas, she solves murders with the help of her friend, New Age shop owner Ruby Wilcox, and a variety of interesting characters. Hangman's Root is about the apparent suicide of a professor at the local university.
