Winner of the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Award for Comic Writing 2003 (as well as the Man Booker Prize 2003)...named one of the 100 Best Things in the World by GQ Magazine (wow, I've never heard of that one!), the riotous adventures of Vernon Gregory Little in small-town Texas and beachfront Mexico mark one of the most spectacular, irreverent and bizarre debuts of the 21st century so far...

I'm feeling quite chuffed right now. I wasn't expecting any books to me in the mail and lo and behold this one arrived. I thought I recognised the handwriting on the envelope - "mmmm," I thought to myself as I was walking up the driveway, "perhaps, I'm getting a book meant for someone else." [MmeClinton sent me Amsterdam by Ian McEwan last week.] But, yippee, this book was meant to be for me. Shall get to it ASAP.

By the way this morning, in the shower, I was pondering on the possibility of reading the "nominees" to the Booker Prize winners as soon as I finish reading the winners. Anybody want to join me on that one? Am I a book-addict, or not. No, don't answer that one, lol

This is next after my current read, Hotel World by Ali Smith, c. 2001.

I just finished this book. I have to say that the second half grabbed me more than the first half. Interesting ending. Again, this is not a book I would have picked up on my own so I'm pleased to have joined bookcrossing, and in particular, this project of reading the Booker winners.

I collect quotes as I read. These ones are fun, poetical, or even philosophical. Take what you like, and leave the rest. Note that these aren't necessarily the "best" in the book. These happen to be close to the spot where I stopped reading each night.

When I'm all packed, I pause to listen at the door mapping the voices in the living room. p82
[comment: I haven't heard this term before]

She scurries up the hall like a blood clot. p135

This arrived in the mail today. I have a few bookring books to read before I get to it... shouldn't be too long, though.

This has been my favorite Booker Award winning book so far. I am still mulling it over and think it will stay with me for some time to come. My sense of humor is definitely different from the reviewers of the book. A tragic comedy of errors, perhaps, certainly not a comedy. The turn of phrase was unique and the imagery really grabbed me, but only to make it more tragic, not less.

I'll mail it out to Jenatleisure as soon as I get her address. Her profile says she has limited access to the internet this month so it may be a while.

Sent to Dadou: August 16

Arrived this morning. I've already read this so I'll read the book that came with it next then send them both on.
