"Liz, Alix and Esther were among the most brilliant of their generation. To these three gifted and ambitious young women, fresh from Cambridge in the 1950's, the world offered its riches....
On New Year's Eve 1979 they reunite. What does the future now hold for Liz, assured Harley Street psychotherapist, wife, mother and stepmother; for relentlessly well-intentioned Alix, teaching English literature to young girl offenders; and for Esther, eccentric connoisseur of art, and resolutely single.
Margaret Drabble's magnificent new novel, her first for seven years, explores the lives of these three women, and in telling of their oves and losses, their hopes and fears, she creates an unforgettable panorama of our changing times."

I'm not sure if I 'got' this book on all its levels, but I enjoyed it anyway. The story of the three main characters is used to explore Britain in the early 1980s - the effects of the New Right, the decay of Northern manufacturing towns - but also shows on a personal level how new ideas and ideologies affect the decisions people make about jobs, families, marriages etc.
It's strange how, even only at the age of 25, I'm learning about this stuff like it's history.

I've always wanted to read something by Margaret Drabble.....heres my chance
UPDATE: I've had to have a major sort out of Mount Toobie :o( and i'm now on a self inflicted ban of picking up any more books at meets (unless they're for wild releasing) so unfortunately this one is going to become a victim of the cull :o(

As the cafe bookshelves are full I had fun going for a walk and leaving these books along the Black Woodpecker walk - suitable for pushchairs - between the cafe and the elephant pond. They are mostly on benches in Official Release Bags.

Found the book whilst walking in Salcey Forest. Rather a dull read I'm afraid. Have recently enjoyed reading The Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler, The Salesman by Joseph O' Connor, The Piano Tuner by Daniel Taylor. Intend to read Kate Atkinson's Case Histories next. Loved Behind the Scenes. Left the Drabble near La Coupee, on the beautiful Channel Island of Sark. Be interested to see where it goes next.
