London, 1849, is gripped with the cholera epidemic. Harriet, the youngest daughter of an eminent MP is sent to live with her relations in the country to escape the danger, where the talk is of weddings, social advancement - and also the new colonies of New Zealand and Canada and the need for English emigrants...

But Harriet's life is a dual one - behind the facade of her very proper upbringing is a young woman desparate to escape - not just from the restraints of a rigid social order, but something altogether darker...

This book is a real page turner - I bought it from a second hand shop on the basis that it looked OK - and it turned out to be one of the best books I've read so far this year. It mixes adventure with suspense and romance, and is skillfully researched and written - with a lot that is left up to the imagination of the reader.

Very good indeed.

Thanks Koalabare!!!!!!
I was very happy to receive this book as a surprise, and from the summary at the back I think I'm going to enjoy it a lot :)

It was amazing, I saw a big package and couldn't get it, as a book would be smaller: when I opened it and 2 books came out I was very curious, then I found your card and a big smile came into my face! Thanks soooo much!

I really liked this book, it was completely gripping, describing Harriet's (and women's) life in a way that really makes me thankful of living in this age...
