London, 1849, is gripped with the cholera epidemic. But Harriet's life is a dual one - behind the facade of her very proper upbringing is a young woman desparate to escape - not just from the restraints of a rigid social order, but something altogether darker...

This book is a real page turner - I bought it from a second hand shop on the basis that it looked OK - and it turned out to be one of the best books I've read so far this year. It mixes adventure with suspense and romance, and is skillfully researched and written - with a lot that is left up to the imagination of the reader.

Very good indeed.

I really liked this book, it was completely gripping, describing Harriet's (and women's) life in a way that really makes me thankful of living in this age...
