From The Asian Review of Books:
"Annping Chin's Four Sisters of Hofei is a picture of that other country, of China in the first half of the century. It is the story of four sisters, the Changs, growing up mostly in the provincial town of Hofei. It is hardly a traditional "history", being highly anecdotal and personal. Rather than dates and chronologies, the book is a series of letters, reminiscences, descriptions of daily routines, loves, family and special events."
