I received this book as a gift from my mom.

This is one of those books you can't put down. I think I was expecting more of a spiritual book but I was ok with it being more of a story about how a family reacts to tragedy.

I gave it to my sister for her train trip to Halifax.

I loved reading this book on the train. Well, as much as you can enjoy a book that starts with the brutal murder of a child. I liked reading about the Susie's version of heaven. I especially loved the section from which the title is derived, and the idea that tragedy forces a family to regrow, but the new structure is so very delicate. A beautiful novel.

I stayed up into the wee hours reading - which is a good sign - I enjoyed the premise. I liked her concept of Heaven and I was keen to see how she would manage to resolve the story but when I got there I found her ending too neat. I think it would have better served the story to have left the reader wondering about the killer. I didn't like the way Susie "borrowed" Ruth's body - the passage felt out of context and for lack of a better word, lame.
All up tho - it was original, non-linear and tightly focused. I enjoyed the read.

I found this book shortly after the last member left it at Pete's Fruitique here in Halifax. I hadn't read a fiction novel in a long time and this book has inspired me to get back at it. I stayed up late hanging on Sebold's descriptions of heaven and enjoyed her interpretation. I also spent a few chapters in tears. I caught glimpes of myself in these characters and enjoyed the experience of "feeling" and not simply reading. Thank you to all who worked to bring this book to me. I will leave it to serendipity now and find the perfect moment or person to pass it along to.

The writing style is good but the subject matter is too frightening and sad for a mother of a nine year old girl - I couldn't get beyond association.
