For the first 38 pages it seems as if the spine has been broken. Other than that, this book is in good shape.

From a review on the back:

This book dramatically chronicles the tortured, devoted relationship between LuLing Young and her daughter Ruth... A strong novel, filled with idiosyncratic, sympathetic characters, haunting images, historical complexity, significant contemporary themes, and suspenseful mystery.

I liked this a lot!
A mother-daughter story spiced with haunting ancestors, stories of the past and the present.
Now I will start reading "The Kitchen God's wife"!

A package from Finland - how wonderful! I didn't realise when I accepted this book that it was coming from overseas, let alone Finland. :P For economy mail, it sure came quickly. Thank you - onto Mt TBR it goes.

While I enjoyed this book, it didn't captivate me the way The Joy Luck Club did. Tan is a fine writer - but I think that I'll hold off on reading more of her work for the time being.
