I'm not always a fan of books where the story flips back and forth, but this one was quite good. I did want the story to move along a bit quicker in places, though. I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed with the ending, especially given what all the characters had endured. It does fit with how things were in that part of America at the time, though.

Well first of all I must admit to almost giving up on this, I didn't like the start much, those hospital scenes weren't very inspiring, but I remember you saying Kiwikat, that it improved, so I kept going, but it wasn't really until Ruby arrived that I got more interested.
It is a book with a lot of atmosphere and you are really drawn into the surroundings which are described so well. I liked the ending, but it did seem somewhat abrupt. One thing that did irritate me though was the lack of speech marks, some of the time you couldn't even tell who was speaking. After reading this I feel I have learnt a little more about America's history. Will have to check out the movie now and see how Nicole Kidman lives up to my image of Ada.
Thanks again Kiwikat!

When I was in holiday in NZ (I am from Australia), I found this book at the Pop Inn Cafe. I had never heard of book crossing however it sounded like a cool concept so I decided to take the book back home to Australia and read it...since I was on holidays! I am still in the process of reading the book...it is a little slow to begin with so I'll see how it goes! I will probably leave it in Adelaide somewhere to be picked up!

YAY! I have finally finished Cold Mountain..it was a mammoth effort! I did enjoy the book, however it was slightly long-winded...due to the extreme descriptive language of the countryside etc. The ending was the best...and so unexpected...won't tell anyone what happens though! I'm not sure where I'm going to leave the book...may give it to a friend or leave it somewhere! Hmmmm...now I'm going to watch the movie..to compare!

Journal Entry 9 by Lisey2 from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Monday, April 24, 2006
After having watched the film, the book has increased im it's rating for me. I feel that the movie lacked lustre in the way the countryside, activites and more were explained...the book seemed to bring these out in it's own wonderful way! It also glossed over some events which the book emphasised.
