Another great read from one of my favourite authors, Isabel Allende. Her books provide a window on life in South America.
Irene Beltran, the beautiful, unconventional daughter of a wealthy family, is a journalist on a popular women's magazine in an unnamed South American military dictatorship.
Her photographer, Frnacisco Leal, is the son of a MArxist projessor, an exile from Spain.
Together they stumble onto a mass grave where the bodies of people tortured and murdered by the police have been dumped.
As their love grows in the shadow of death, they struggle to bring those responsible to justice and are quickly engulfed in a vortex of terror and violence.
