I am looking forward to reading this series of books having enjoyed the Enders series. I got this book via www.sf-books.com.

Edited following Teachie's comments:

This is book 3 of a six book series - at the time this was published only 3 had been written. The books following this one are:

Alvin Journeyman
Heartfire
The Crystal City

I really enjoyed this book. Where book 2 looks into the relationship between American settlers and the Native Americans (Reds) this book show the injustices done against the slaves brought from Africa (blacks). All in the name of religion - it made me shudder to think even though this is fiction I am sure it had elements of historical truth in it. A fascinating book which built the story on through Alvin's Blacksmith aprenticeship and featured the 'Torch' who saved him in the first book.

I think this was the best book of the three. These are all written in such a way that it seems perfectly normal and believable for people to have a 'knack'for doing unusual things.I just wish I had the patience of Alvin Maker. The only criticism I have to make is that his story was left unfinished....is there to be a fourth book?
Celticstar has not read any of these books and has been added to the list for all three.
This book is now being posted off to Avesbury surfer.

I recieved this paperback this morning with glee as I was ill in bed most of the day and read half of it in a matter of hours. It has all the mystical and magical elements of the first two book.

I expect to finish this book tomorrow or the next day and will send it on to the next ring person.

Arrived safely this morning, thanks to all in the spiral.

Can anyone tell me who is next, as I have all three now and no idea what to do with them when I finish. Or am I the last in line?

Thanks to the holidays I've been able to whizz through this!

I enjoyed it more than Red Prophet, which, looking back, could almost have been inserted after the rest of the series had been written. This time it covers slavery but somehow it felt more part of the storyline this time. I am now wondering if each book deals with an aspect of American history.

This will be going off to Rillaith with the first two, in the morning.

Arrived safely this morning with books 1 and 2.

Just in case I was, like, running out of books or something. ;) Good to see that's it's slightly better than number 2, so if I'm not so taken by that one I'll still read this after!

I accidentally read this book first of the 3, but knowing a few little hints of what had happened in books 1 & 2 and what would happen after didn't spoil them for me. It's very easy to get into this on its own, wihtout having read the rest of the series, too!

Have had to add the next 4 books of the series to my wishlist, will be glad to read more of these!

Currently in the middle of book 2, so will send the three on together once I finish it in the next day or two.
