reading now; then I'll probably let it go

actually, I'm keeping this one, but I will find another one to share on bookcrossing. Mine is a 1968 edition so I'd like to hang on to it.

Anyway, back in its day, this book was a shocker. Then again, so was the movie (which was excellent -- I highly recommend it). Now, probably because I've seen the movie, and because horror books are what they are nowadays, it seems mighty tame. But it's still very very good and a must for every horror collection (imho).

brief plot summary
Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse are a happily married couple, living in New York city, and at the beginning of the book, they have just been notified that they are next on the list for an apartment at the Bramford, an old black building complete with gargoyles that they have been wanting to move into for a long time. Guy is a so-so actor; Rosemary wants a baby. They decide to take the apartment, and that's when all the trouble starts. Her neighbors, Minnie & Roman, are old & stifling -- always hanging around or Guy is always over there listening to Roman's old stories. Eventually, Guy gets a break on the stage, as the actor who was chosen for a part went mysteriously blind & Guy has to take his place. His career zooms afterwards and Rosemary becomes pregnant. But it is not until after the death of a well-meaning friend that she slowly begins to realize that all is not as good as it seems and that she is in danger.

A lot of the reviews for this book say that the book's ending is a "shocker." Don't believe it. Personally I didn't like the ending. But that's just me.

Give it a try.

RELEASE NOTES:

Well, I seem to have way too many books that I can move without running up a huge moving bill. So I offered books on freecycle, and got a taker. Turns out he's a book collector, and what he doesn't keep will be passed along, donated, whatever. It's sad, but I'll start over again when I move!
