Thanks for RABCK, quinnsmom. Look forward to reading, looks very intriguing.
One of the best debuts I've read. It's set in 1929 and during the the Great War. While it starts out as a PI novel, it then morphs into a coming of age, rags-to-riches story, then goes back to the mystery. I was dismayed at first when, around page 60, the book has an extended flashback. I usually hate flashbacks [ one of the reasons I couldn't enjoy Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver] but for once it fitted well into the book and didn't feel like a major shift. All of the characters are vivid, and the ending is very poignant. The next in the series is called "Birds of a Feather."
Thanks, quinnsmom!
THis is MIA! Got lost in mail, though bookcrosser received box slip but no package.
Arrived today! Thanks, hurricanereader! (Phew! I'm so happy these books survived the postal gaunlet the second time around... thank you for re-sending them).
