I picked up this book because it dealt with ye old transformation theme -- the frog prince variation, in this case. Anyway, it was actually quite decent, overall -- very easy to read and action-filled; however, it wasn't quite what I thought I was getting into. I kind of expected a fun, perhaps a bit ironic or iconoclastic, type of look at traditional fairytale scenarios. Instead, Fair Peril ended up being kind of an examination of the main character's psyche and of the way fairytales may tap into/reflect basic aspects of the human subconscious -- not to say that it was completely serious or anything -- there was just a lot more going on symbolically/metaphysically/subtextually than I ever expected there to be going in. So, still very readable and fun to read, just not quite as clear-cut as its general "feel" at the beginning would seem to suggest -- which isn't a bad thing, just a bit of a . . . surprise, I guess. Certainly worth reading if you have an interest in fairytales as something other than just pretty little stories -- and the ending's rather decent, too, which is nice; just don't pick it up expecting a nice, romantic "girl-meets-frog" story, as this is actually something quite different.

I picked up Fair Peril at my son's house in Virginia to read on the plane ride home. I enjoyed it. It was easy to read and different from anything else I had ever read. It was like a story within a story. Well worth the few hours it took to read it.
