Superb writer, specially when she is writing about adolescent schoolgirl hi-jinks. The story concerns Alice's admiration for "Jem", a real rat-bag with a taste for Mozart operas who spends a bit of time at Alice's school and then disappears leaving no forwarding address. Alice never really recovers from this severed friendship and doesn't really seem to move on, and when they reconnect later, as of course is inevitable in a story of this type, it is somewhat unsatisfactory. You certainly don't want to put this book down, though.
