(I never did take this one to Sydney - might try for the Dunedin convention instead.)

Holidaying together at their baches near Napier in the 1930s, a group of families decide to make a movie. As filming progresses, tensions rise, both within the families and between Pakeha holidaymakers and Maori residents.

The book started promisingly enough, and I was enjoying the switching point of view between the mother and child who take turns at telling the story. But it started to lose its way about half way through, and by the end I was bored and just wanting to finish the book and get on to something else. The story makes some pretty heavy-handed points about race and gender roles, but otherwise I couldn't really figure out what the author's point was in writing it, because the story meanders confusingly among all sorts of themes, and the end is just weird - I've got no idea what was supposed to be going on there. Other than a lot of references to the Napier earthquake, it didn't feel particularly 1930s, either - most of the characters seemed to have much more modern sensibilities.

Overall verdict: readable, but not really worth the bother.
