Thank you, jamieh2003! I accepted this on the bookrelay to add to my bookbox. I read it a few years ago.
It is the story of Offred who once lived a normal free life in the Republic of Gilead. Now women are no longer allowed to read and are forced into servitude. Offred is the handmaid in the home of the Commander and his wife. She is only allowed out once a day to go to the market. Once a month, she must submit to the Commander and hope he makes her pregnant, because in a time of declining births, Handmaids are valued only if they can reproduce.

This was in the "You Go, Girl" book box. I've read it before but I loved it so much I have to read it again.

----

Well, I read it again and it still hits the mark. What I noticed this time around was the sexism in the historical notes. The guest speaker makes some pretty crude jokes sexual about women (They called it the Handmaid's Tale because her "tail" was the whole point). Atwood once again shows that even though the offical mistreatment ended, even hundreds of years after Offred's story men treat women as inferiors and sex objects.
