I have enjoyed a few of the Agatha Raisin books, but she is even more pathetic and annoying here than usual (in regards to her love life). It distracts too much from the mystery aspect of the story (and would tick off anyone even remotely feminist). I will be setting this free, hopefully, to find a more sympathetic home.

Journal Entry 4 by next-week from Spruce Grove, Alberta Canada on Monday, October 4, 2004
Agatha Raisin dreamed of marrying her next-door neighbour, James Lacey, but only two weeks after the honeymoon, the marriage is falling apart. James is critical, bad-tempered, and unfaithful to Agatha with Melissa Sheppard. Agatha throws noisy scenes, breaks dishes, and dumps a mug of beer on James's head when she catches him holding hands with Melissa in the village pub.

Melissa is murdered and James disappears, leaving bloodstains in his cottage and in his car. Agatha and her friend Charles decide to delve into Melissa's past, hoping that if they find out more about her, they may point the way to a murderer other than James.

As a heroine, Agatha is hard to take. She is angry one minute, then breaks into tears the next. She insults and annoys people. She pulls stupid pranks, such as telling a Neighbourhood Watch woman that she intends to shoot a man she & Charles have come to question. Sometimes you start to sympathize with her, but then you realize she brings her troubles on herself, including her disastrous marriage. The mystery of what happened to James and who killed Melissa is good, but Agatha herself is a pain!
