I picked this book up from the free book exchange at the Farmingdale Public Library.

This one grabbed my attention because it is set in Manhattan

Product Description:

Discover passion in the city that never sleeps . . .

#1 New York Times bestselling author NORA ROBERTS presents the passionate heart of the city that never sleeps, in these two complete novels . . .

LOCAL HERO
His trade was creating heroes, but comic book writer Mitch Dempsey had never seen himself as one. But something about Hester Wallace, the shy single mom who moved in upstairs, made him long to protect, honor and love her forever. . . .

DUAL IMAGE
Playing Booth DeWitt's cruel ex-wife was pushing Ariel Kirkwood's acting career in the right direction -- but pushing sexy Booth away. She wanted to be his leading lady -- for life. Could she convince Booth to see her for the woman she truly was?

Local Hero was a wonderfully heart-warming story equally about parental love as about romantic love. I adored how what started as a common interest in comic books and their heros grew into Mitch becoming the caring, fun, confidence-inspiring father-figure Radley so badly needed in his life. And the rewards Mitch gleened from the relationship, a sense of structure and responsibility in his life, was equally as endearing.

Hester is very protective of her son, and rigidly shaped by her past (being abandoned by an irresponsible husband, and raising her child alone) - she is slow to trust Mitch because he seems too good to be true at first, but his persistence finally gets her to let down her guard and enjoy life and love again.

As a side-note, it was kind of odd to have main characters named Hester and Radley, two names so strongly associated with very prominent characters of classic literature (c'mon, could there really be any other Hester besides Hester Prynne, or any other Radley than Boo?)

I found Duel Image difficult to stick with, I suppose because I didn't find Booth to be very likable - he was so hard and full of bitterness. I'm glad I continued on with it though, because I truly enjoyed the subplot of Ariel trying to gain custody of her orphaned nephew. This parental love story was more endearing to me than the romantic one between Booth and Ariel.
