1. Appointment in Samarra:
From the Publisher
Appointment in Samarra is the first and most widely read book by the writer Fran Lebowitz called "the real F. Scott Fitzgerald."
In December 1930, just before Christmas, the Gibbsville social circuit is electrified with parties and dances, where the music plays late into the night and the liquor flows freely. At the center of the social elite stand Julian and Caroline English - the envy of friends and strangers alike. But in one rash moment born inside a highball glass, Julian breaks with polite society and begins a rapid descent toward self-destruction.
From The Critics
Library Journal
"If you want to read a book by a man who knows exactly what he is writing about and has written it marvelously, read Appointment in Samarra," insisted Ernest Hemingway of this 1934 title, all the more high praise as it was O'Hara's first novel. The story follows Julian and Caroline English and the frailty of small-town society. This edition features an introduction by John Updike. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

2. BUtterfield 8
Annotation
A bestseller when it was originally published in 1935, this is a brilliant, brutal portrait of New York's speakeasy generation. "Like Henry James, O'Hara could create a world where class and social strictures are all-important but not openly discussed."--The Village Voice.
From the Publisher
A bestseller upon its publication in 1935, Butterfield 8 was inspired by a news account of the discovery of the body of a beautiful young woman washed up on a Long Island beach. Was it an accident, a murder, a suicide? The circumstances of her death were never resolved, but O'Hara seized upon the tragedy to imagine the woman's down-and-out life in New York City in the early 1930s.
O'Hara understood better than any other American writer how class can both reveal and shape characters," Fran Lebowitz writes in her Introduction. With brash honesty and a flair for the unconventional, Butterfield 8 lays bare the unspoken and often shocking truths that lurked beneath the surface of a society still reeling from the effects of the Great Depression.

Ah. Well, My parents are trying to sell our house, so I went through the ritual "kicked out of the house for an hour or two" today, Saturday. I had a book to return at the library, and, rather than infer the wrath of late fees, thought I'd best return it on time. So I did.
Upon leaving the library, I came accross a small plastic bag with "Free!! Pick me up!!" on it, and d my first impression was that it was yet another religious right bible basher opportunity to get everybody and a bag of chips to read the bible. But, alas, it wasn't and I'm eternally grateful. I walked to the nearby grocery store, bought a coke, and read for about 45 minutes, and then I realized I'd better get home! I have homework to do after all. The perils of high school and such.
I plan on dropping mr. book off someplace wonderful later today, after I cram in a few more chapters of Butterfield 8. I mean, after I finish my homework. yeah. Thanks a bunch, good travelin' mr. book!
