Set in New York in 1896. A serial killer is on the loose, murdering young male prostitutes. The Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, struggling to catch the murderer turns to the psychologist or 'alienist' Laszlo Kreizler.

Not only a gripping thriller but gives a great sense of a strange, antique New York.

I'm having a clear out of books that are clearly not going to get anywhere near the top of Mt Toobie in the forseeable future.

As part of this exercise, I'm taking this to the Stamford Arms meet in London today.

Will I never learn? I MUST NOT look at books that other people bring to meetups - otherwise I just pick them up!
This one looked far too good to pass up, despite the size of Mt Toobie. It will be languishing there for a long time though, so if anyone spots it and wants to borrow it, please give me a shout.
Fuzzhead, when are you coming to a London meet?

I finally got round to reading this one - what a cracker! The sense of time and place you get is tremendous, and the work of the fledgeling detectives is fascinating. Rahar109 expressed an interest when I showed this book as my current reading material at the August London meetup, so if I remember I shall be taking it to the September one for her. If I accidentally release it or pass it to someone else in the meantime, I'd be extremely grateful if you could let me know!

A very good, atmospheric book. An enthralling thriller that also paints a vivid picture of the seamy side of late 19th century New York.

This arrived safely this morning. Thanks very much for sending it rahar109. I have read this before, but about 13(!) years ago, and wanted to re-read before I read the following story Angel of Darkness.

I really enjoyed reading this again. It was as good as I vaguely remembered! I like the mix of characters, and I thought Caleb Carr was good at evoking a sense of what I imagine Victorian New York to have been like.

I think I'll offer this as a ray, as I think it will appeal to those who have enjoyed "An Interpretation of Murder" by Jed Rubenfield but haven't come across this writer before.
