Now being offered in BOOKRING format. (See journal entry below.) bookring successfully completed

This is the book that started it all. The first of the Anita Blake series. MOST EXCELLENT!

Book Description
No one knows the dark desires of the soul better than New York Times bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton. In Guilty Pleasures, she introduces Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter. Anita's small, dark, and dangerous. But when the city's most powerful vampire comes to her for help, Anita is faced with her greatest fear--a man capable of arousing in her a hunger strong enough to match his own...

"Why should it surprise me that I was alive?...
There on the right side of my neck was the real thing.. Tiny, diminutive, fang marks. Nikolaos [had] contaminated me... I bet she thought I'd be scared of her. She was right on that. But I spend most of my waking hours confronting and destroying things that I fear. A thousand-year-old master vampire was a tall order, but a girl's got to have a goal."

Starting a BookRing for the first 4 books in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. See the forum posting at http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/20/1318548 for details and links to the offered titles.

PM me if you'd like to join. Be sure to specify which rings you want to join since each book will be shipped separately, as well as your shipping preferences. If you're joining the ring after it's already started its journey, know that your place in the list will be determined based on your geographic location in conjunction with what is best for the other participants. While I'll certainly take your shipping preferences into account during list ordering, I don't like to always stick the same person with International shipping costs every time. So if you're going to participate in the rings for the entire series, at least 10 of which will be International rings, you should plan to have to ship Internationally at least once, unless there are enough others to pass the cost around to.

Ring Participants (last modified 23-Jan-2006)
· NeedSun, Ontario, Canada (ship Intl)
· jarrett622, Virginia, USA (ship ?)
· Aramena (formerly casseytara), Oklahoma, USA (ship Intl)
· AngelKitty, Colorado, USA (ship US)
· CdnBlueRose, Colorado, USA (ship Intl)
· midwinter, Arizona, USA (ship US)
· morpha, Oregon, USA (ship Intl)
· Pyan, Wisconsin, USA (ship Intl/surface)
· geniedances, Texas, USA (ship Intl) (to Aus. via GPM)
· gypsyrose02, Western Australia (ship Intl/pref Aussie) **
· dudesgirl, S. Australia (ship Intl) unreachable
· GateGypsy, Japan (ship Intl) (moving back to Canada Dec 05)
· fungirl503, OR, USA (ship Intl)
· Whisperwind, NE, USA (ship ?) requested to be skipped
· thegoaliegirl, OH, USA (ship pref US)
· CheriePie, Massachusetts, USA <== returned to me

Below participants moved to ring for 2nd copy:
· Sunneschii, Switzerland (ship Europe)
· Auglaise, Wales, UK (ship Intl/surface) acquired own copy
· sweetf, UK (ship Intl/surface)
· Margih, Finland (ship Europe)
· CandyDarling, Finland (ship Intl)
· jessicaloveyou, Singapore (ship Intl)

** Shipped via surface mail to GateGypsy's Canada address on Oct 7 which according to gypsyrose02 should've taken about 4 months to get there (approx Feb 06). But it arrived early—on Dec 14 instead. Woohoo! In any case, since I thought this would hold up the ring considerably and cause problems for those on the list for books 2-4 who haven't yet read this first book in the series, I acquired a 2nd copy of this book to complete the ring for the remaining overseas participants.
  • The above list order may be modified at any time to accomodate new participants or those who wish to leave the ring. So you should always refer to the list included in this journal entry before mailing the book out after you've finished with it.
  • After messaging the next person in the list for their address, you should allow at least a week for a reply (to allow for vacations). You may want to send more than one PM if they don't reply to the first one since I've experienced firsthand issues of BookCrossing PM's not being delivered. In Search Of (ISO) posts in the Bookring Forum also work well. If they haven't replied after 1 to 1-1/2 weeks, skip them and move on to the next person in the list.
  • Please post a journal entry here (1) when you first receive the book so we all know it has arrived safely, and (2) after you've finished reading it and are ready to send it along. Of course, please include your thoughts and opinions on the book itself too. :)
  • For courtesy sake, please try not to hang on to this book for more than 4-6 weeks as others are also waiting to read it. If you don't think you can get to the book in that timeframe, you can request to be skipped over and added to the end of the ring instead. Just use your best judgement so as not to hold up the ring.
  • Remember that at the end of the list, THIS BOOK SHOULD BE RETURNED TO ME, not released into the wild. I enjoy rereading my favorite books over time, and lend them out to other people in my life too, who are not necessarily members of BookCrossing.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING
Do not assume that surface shipping is always the most efficient choice. For many International destinations from the US, a single paperback can be shipped in a small Global Priority Mail (GPM) envelope for only $5, about $1 more than surface mail to the same destination. And rather than the 4-6 weeks quoted shipping time of surface mail (often longer), GPM takes only 3-5 days and includes a delivery confirmation number too. I strongly suggest that anyone joining any of my rings consider this shipping option when mailing overseas from the US. The minute any one of my PC books gets lost in shipping is the day I'll stop offering bookrings for my PC books altogether.

I'll specifically arrange the ring order so that the inital overseas journey from the US goes to a country that accepts the Global Priority Mail option, and if you're the one responsible for that trip, you'll probably be hearing from me directly as well. The list is ordered most efficiently, to minimize both shipping costs and times.

THANKS AND HAPPY READING!

RELEASE NOTES:

Kicking off this bookring by mailing first to NeedSun in Canada. Will be posted at PO on Friday via Airmail Letter Post, and is being mailed along with 2 other LKH books I'm lending her. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 4 by NeedSun from Perth Road, Ontario Canada on Sunday, December 5, 2004
This book came in the mail sometime last week along with the two others you lent to me. I will just finish off the book I am currently reading, read this one then pass it on. I am really looking forward to this series, thank you for starting this ring.

Journal Entry 5 by NeedSun from Perth Road, Ontario Canada on Thursday, December 9, 2004
I love the way this author writes. Short choppy sentences that move so fast. I was up to page 75 and the action hadn't stopped. If the rest of the series is as good as this one was, it is a real winner.

I'll be sending this off to jarrett622 to day or tomorrow.

Thanks again CheriePie, you have turned me onto a whole new genru.

Journal Entry 6 by jarrett622 from Clayton, Georgia USA on Saturday, December 18, 2004
This was at the PO yesterday. I'm getting ready to begin reading it in just a bit. I've heard so much about this author and this series that I just had to give it a try. :-) Thanks!

Journal Entry 7 by jarrett622 from Clayton, Georgia USA on Thursday, December 30, 2004
I really liked this! I was surprised. It was a bit different than I was thinking it was going to be.

I'll be mailing this out to casseytara the first part of this week.

Journal Entry 8 by wingAramenawing from Noble, Oklahoma USA on Wednesday, January 12, 2005
This came yesterday and I'm itching to get started! Of course I immediately read the back cover, and when I read "An R-rated Buffy the Vampire Slayer" my spidey senses tingled! (I'm a huge Buffy fan). I'm actually in the middle of another book ring book, but since it's a totally different genre (East of Eden), I may have to start this one anyway rather than wait!

Journal Entry 9 by wingAramenawing from Noble, Oklahoma USA on Monday, February 7, 2005
I finished this up yesterday and I did enjoy it. It was a quick, action packed read, and I never knew what to expect next. I think I'll want to read the rest of the series, but I'm debating whether to join the other rings at this time as I'm signed up for so many rings already! This is being mailed to AngelKitty today.

Journal Entry 10 by AngelKitty from Denver, Colorado USA on Thursday, February 17, 2005
Just got this in the mail, and will start it as soon as I finish my current book. (Hopefully within the next couple of days)

Journal Entry 11 by AngelKitty from Denver, Colorado USA on Sunday, March 6, 2005
Loved this book! I have to admit that I was kind of worried when I saw the "mix of romance and horror" in the cover's blurb (as I hate romance novels), but it was okay. Maybe that part comes later? I enjoyed the new world of Anita Blake where Undead-Americans fight for their legal rights and raise such questions as "Do heirs have to return their inheritance if the deceased becomes undead?", and does "Till death do us part" mean a widow has a legal divorce?

I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

On its way to CdnBlueRose.

Journal Entry 12 by CdnBlueRose from Steinbach, Manitoba Canada on Saturday, April 23, 2005
I received this book in today's mail. Postmark is April 21 - mailing date is not mentioned in prior reader's post. I'll be sending this right back out as soon as I get an address from the next person - I picked up another copy of it just last week at a charity book sale. Thanks for offering this up, CheriePie!

Journal Entry 15 by wingmidwinterwing from Tucson, Arizona USA on Monday, June 13, 2005
As a huge Buffy fan, I'm not sure where they drew that connection. This book has none of the crackling wit or silly reparte that make Buffy so fun. What it does have, though, is a tough heroine quite capable of carrying her own series w/out riding on Buffy's coattails :)
Anita's sassy and gritty and a very welcome addition to the lengthy list of vampire fiction. Hamilton manages to bring the fun back to some tired cliches, and the book is an extremely fast read. Can't wait for book 2!

Passing on to morpha today...

Journal Entry 16 by morpha from Astoria, Oregon USA on Monday, June 20, 2005

Journal Entry 17 by morpha from Astoria, Oregon USA on Tuesday, August 9, 2005
I apologise to all who are waiting, and especially to CheriPie for hanging on to this book for so long. I read it the day I got it, but it got lost in a pile of books that needed repair, so I forgot.

I enjoyed this book very much. The action kept me turning pages until far past bedtime.Like AngelKitty, I was fascinated with the culture of the Undead. I had previously read two of the most recent books in this series, so I have a deep appreciation for the author's development of recurring characters during the course of the series.
One small disappointment, I would have liked to have been able to witness the "coming out" of the Undead into mainstream culture, and would have liked to follow Anita from the start of her career.
Mailing out to Pyan today.

Journal Entry 18 by Pyan from Menasha, Wisconsin USA on Monday, August 15, 2005
I received in the mail today & I'm upset because it was sent to me without any PM asking whether I still wanted to receive it & requesting my address. I didn't want it; nor the other book sent with it.

Please don't send a ring to the next person without knowing if they still want to receive. In addition to that consideration, people may have moved or be on vacation.

Right now my life is in chaos, I have two friends in the hospital and no time for rings. If I'd been contacted, I would have requested to be skipped. Now, I have to pay postage to send these on to the next person when they should have been sent directly to the next person.

Edited to Add: I've PM'd grover3d.

After reading one of Hamilton's fantasy novels, I didn't know what to expect from the vimpire novels. I liked this one a lot. Writing style reminds me more of the Charlaine Harris vampire series than it does Joss Whedon's Buffy. Lots of action with a strong female character in the lead. Now I'm ready for book #2.

Guess what *didn't* take 4 months to get to Canada?

Wow, after the confusion I caused back in October, I was *definately* surprised to find this book in the pile of parcels my father had collected for me! *laughs* I will get to this book ASAP... after I finish the last 200-odd pages of the book I was reading on the plane home.

Thanks for starting this ring, CheriePie! Looking forward to the rest already!

******************************************************************************************

Hey, this was fun! I enjoyed the characters, and particularly liked that sex and the sensuality of vampires was used merely as fact, not plot dependant fodder for filling pages. I mean, that's all fine and dandy, and if the books get more toward that, I doubt I'll complain, but it's always nice to read a book that doesn't have to lean on that crutch. I thought that.. thing... Jean... did... was interesting... and am looking forward to finding out more about what will happen next. I've noticed, though, that Anita Blake has a few similarities to Merry Gentry of her faerie princess trilogy (the short stature, feisty nature, and affinity for firearms **laughs**) -- makes a reader wonder about the author (is she short? Does she *wish* she was?) It's a pity I have to wait so long for the rest of the books, but I eagerly await their arrivals, 'cause I get the idea this series is gunna be engaging.

Journal Entry 28 by fungirl503 from Gladstone, Oregon USA on Friday, February 3, 2006
yea the book is fianlly here. I am almost done with another book. so I will be able to start this book tommow or the next day and since it is a fairly small book I should be done reading by the end of wed to mail out to the next person on thursday.

Journal Entry 29 by fungirl503 from Gladstone, Oregon USA on Sunday, February 5, 2006
this book is going to the next person on the list. I wish I had not read this series out of order. I have read a book before this one that was smack in the middle of the series. what makes it so bad is I already know pretty much what is going to happen, so It made the story boring to me. But it is a good story about anita blake hunting for vampires to kill. she goes to a club called "guilty pleasures" which is like a strip club that has vampires seducing humans. This book is steamy in places and not like most vampire books.
This book is going to head out to the next person on the list.

I absolutely loved this book! I had a very busy week with little time to read. All I wanted to do was curl up and read this book. It was hard for me to put it down (but sadly I did, which is why it took me 5 days to read this). I wasn't too sure what to expect getting into this book but I really enjoyed it and got drawn in. Can't wait to read about what happens in the next book! Glad that I decided to join this bookring, otherwise I doubt I would have picked this out on my own. Thanks!

2002 Jove mass-market paperback reprint (originally published in 1993). ISBN 051513449x. Received in the mail from CheriePie in Wilmington, Massachusetts, USA, for the Keep it moving reverse wishlist relay.

I loved this book. It raises (no pun intended!) some legal questions the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries and the Undead books haven't: If you're undead, do your heirs have to give back your money? If your spouse becomes a vampire, are you still married or is he/she dead? I've just requested the next Anita Blake Vampire Hunter book, The Laughing Corpse, from PaperbackSwap -- then there are 12 more to find. Can't wait!

From the publisher
Published over ten years ago by Ace, Guilty Pleasures marked the debut of a series that was destined to grow from cult favorite to a major New York Times bestseller. Now, for long-time Anita Blake junkies and newfound fans, Guilty Pleasures makes its trade paperback debut. Readers will learn how Anita Blake started raising the dead -- and killing the undead. And how she met Jean Claude, the master vampire destined to become not only her biggest nemesis, but her greatest lover.
