It has chapters that focus in detail on Frederick Townsend Ward and Claire Chennault, both namesakes of American Legion, China Post 1.

The first chapter on Jesuit missionaries, specifically Adam Schall and Ferdinand Verbiest, demonstrating proper astronomy to the Chinese was fascinating. Interesting to see the political fighting between the Jesuits--who got their astronomy right--and the Chinese and Muslim astronomers; and also the struggle between the Jesuits and other missionary orders.

The section on Ward was not at all flattering. But interesting nonetheless. The book repeatedly emphasizes his inexperience and tacks to him a lucky arrogance which was the cause of his successes and failures. Partly right, I guess. At least he was smart enough to assimilate with the Chinese, unlike Gordon.

The treatment of Chennault was brief, but fairly decent. It tended to focus more on the conflict between he and Stilwell than his accomplishments in China or his and the AVG's relationship with the Chinese.

There are some other good sections in this book, though I didn't read them all. I'd say the section on Schall and Verbiest was the best.
