Children of the River (Laurel-Leaf Contemporary Fiction)

I had to read this book for a college class. It was a good book -- supposedly for teens but I think adults would appreciate it too. A young Indian girl (13) is wedded to an 11-year old so he can be treated for his tuberculosis. Her parents think he is an older man but finds out on the wedding day his true age. But they still leave their daughter because it was a contract. Husband dies a few days after wedding. Young girl is left with her in-laws and then the father-in-law dies and then the mother-in-law takes her to a city and dumps her there. She eventually finds work and a life. She learns that she has to depend on herself.
