Journal Entry 5 by riverlee from Wasilla, Alaska USA on Monday, August 29, 2005
My husband and I were at the boat launch in Valdez, Alaska. I held our fishing boat while my husband went up and parked the pickup and boat trailer. When he came back, he gave me the book and told me he'd picked it up at the top of the boat ramp, showed me the "take me" sticker, and jokingly asked me about having "another" book out already. I laughed when I glanced at the author, because we have the same name: Lee Smith. I have published one book of my own under my real name. It is a memoir and called "The Journey From There to Here," the Life Lessons I Have Learned in Fifty-six Years." I told my husband that I had read some of the other Lee Smith's books and that she is an excellent writer. I was happy that my husband had picked up the book and brought it to me in the boat harbor. I now have it at home here in Wasilla, Alaska and have started reading it. One of the best parts of my day is when I go to bed at night and get out a book to read, and this one will be a double pleasure because of the way it came to me. Hope I, too, can send a book off on its own travelling adventure. When I was young, my girlfriend and I would get out the U.S. atlas, open it to a state without looking, then close our eyes and put our finger on town. We would then write a letter to "Box Holder" or "Occupant" at that town, telling who we were and that we would like to have a penpal from there. We almost always got an answer and it was like a mystical experience for us. Who, out of millions of people, would receive our letter? It's like finding a bottle with a note inside washed up on the beach--or better--sending it out. It is tremendous fun, no matter what your age.
