From the AAUW Booksale in Fenton.
Almost a novella, this short Australian book takes place in 1927 Shanghai. In the bar of the Astor House Hotel a psychoanalyst named Ayers has set up a sort of shop treating culture-shocked Westerners. In walks Willy Paradise, a Methodist missionary and his plain but psychotic wife Julia. As Ayers treats, and seduces, Julia, he becomes privy to a world of debauchery painted through the stories she tells of her father, her home in Australia and her night haunts of the seamier parts of Shanghai. But are her stories true or are they some elaborate hoax? And what do they have to do with Ayers himself? This one unwinds with a subtle grace and technicolor cruelty. Highly recommended for fans of Ian McEwan or J.G, Ballard!
