Describing this as a coming-of-age novel is quite accurate. It's basically a story about a girl growing up in one of the poorer regions of Brooklyn in the early 1900's, but it's not by any means a depressing story. There's enough humor interspersed to keep it from being too serious, but it's a novel that will undoubtedly pull a few heartstrings. It's a fairly long one, but the writing is genuine and true, and I'm a little miffed by the fact that it was published way back in 1943, as it reads very much like a present-day novel.
