England, 1930s. Christopher Banks has become the country's most celebrated detective, his cases the talk of London society. Yet one unsolved crime has always haunted him; the mysterious disappearance of his parents, in Old Shanghai, when he was a small boy. Now, as the world lurches towards total war, Banks realises the time has come for him to return to the city of his childhood and at last solve the mystery - that only by his doing so will civilisation be saved from the approaching catastrophe.

Atrapado en la reunión del Dickens. Me llamó la atención un japonés escribiendo sobre la Inglaterra de principios del XX. Un punto de vista distinto que puede resultar interesante.

Caught in yesterday's meet-up. I hope it doesn't get too long or boring. I hate to leave books in the middle, like Tintachina has done. I hope i'll like it. I really liked The Remains of the Day, though

The story is entertaining, but I found the language too "high-brow" for me. I struggled to finish reading it. The language is the same as in "What REmains of the Day", but I felt it really didn't belong in here, a classical detectve story. A bored university graduate decides to become a private detective. He'll investigate his own background.

Excellent book, though not Ishiguro's best.

I just sent the book off to Abismithy in Canada. Happy Reading!

Just arrived back from a holiday and this book was waiting for me! Thank you!

I enjoyed this story, I found it interesting and a little sad. I won't say too much as I hate to spoil it for the next readers!

I've read one of his other books, Never Let Me Go, but I much preferred this one.

Posted today from New Jersey to Joanthro!

I apologize for keeping this book for so long. My job required me to travel much more than expected recently.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The mystery seemed secondary to the longing of the main character. His world ended twice: once when his parents disappeared and then again with the onset of WWII. One private, one shared with everyone. By the time he learns about what happened to his parents it almost feels superfluous and maybe even selfish knowledge. Fabulous book - thanks veleta!

Babyimran asked to be skipped; mailed ealier today.
