I read this for my reading group. It is the story of Christopher who has Apergers Syndrome. He lives with his dad. One evening he finds a dead dog and starts investigating it Sherlock Holmes style. I enjoyed this read, and agained a little insight nto Aspergers. I found the portrayl of home life as accurate to my experience and felt for bot Christopher and his Dad.

There was some work I had to do last night, but I wanted to at least get this book started, so I picked it up to read a few pages while my computer booted up. DO NOT TRY THIS. Four hours later, the book was finished but the work wasn't :-)

This was an absolutely engrossing read, and I recommend it highly. I will pass it on as soon as I receive sweetpea0678's address.

Thanks so much for sharing, billhookbabe!

Journal Entry 10 by Lpree from Omaha, Nebraska USA on Wednesday, January 5, 2005
I finished this last night. The story immediately drew me in with the interesting narration. I don't know much about autism or Asperger's Syndrome, but I feel like I know a bit more than I did just from the boy's narration. I felt really proud of him when he made that trip (trying not to give anything away here!) towards the end, and I also felt badly for the father. Anyway, I'd heard this book mentioned a lot, and am glad I finally had the chance to read it.

I'll PM the next person in line and will probably mail this out early next week. Thanks very much to billhookbabe for starting this ring!

What a great story! I'm sorry I have taken so long with it. I got so far behind in my bookrings but I am so glad to have had an opportunity to read this one! I work in a school where one of the students has Asperger's/Autism. What great new insight I now have! Thank you for including me in the ring. I have PM'ed mlbish and will get this off in the mail as soon as I receive an address. Thanks again!

Journal Entry 14 by mlbish from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA on Friday, June 24, 2005
I finished this one last night.

I'm so glad I read this one. The narration is from the point of view of a kid who has Asperger's Syndrome. In fact, the idea is that this child, Christopher, is writing this book himself to recount certain events. It was a very different and interesting perspective. Christopher has an extremely logical mind and does not feel emotions like a normal person would, and the author did a great job of reflecting this in the narrative. Christopher is also a whiz at science and math, and he frequently goes off on tangents about various science things. (I personally loved these tangents because I like science--I thought they were fascinating!) Mr. Haddon really made me understood how the mind of a person with autism/Asperger's syndrome might work, and I have really learned a lot about the disease.

Christopher's lack of emotional attachment to anyone really surprised me. I felt very sorry for his parents in this regard. It must be sad to have a child that you love and protect who doesn't really show his emotions about you at all. I also felt a little sad for Christopher. He had big plans of going to university and having a career as a scientist, but I'm not sure he'd be able to do that, just because he had a lot of trouble even functioning normally in the train station, for example. Perhaps he could, but not without a lot of help.

Although the "plot" of the book was about Christopher's investigation to find out who killed Wellington, the book was really about Christopher and what he learns during this time. He accidentally uncovers a secret about his family that his father has kept from him. There is a great deal of irony in the fact that he discovers the situation surrounding his parents' marriage and forces everyone into highly emotional situations without really feeling any emotion about this himself.

This is an excellent book told from an original point of view. It was certainly an education for me and I loved reading it!

Off to the next person as soon as I can.

RELEASE NOTES:

This is going out to Hobitten today. We're skipping over star69 because she was able to pick up a used copy on the cheap and mysteryfan03 for a reason I can't remember anymore.

Anyway, off it goes! I don't think I've ever sent a book to Denmark before. (I hope the post office people don't laugh at my attempt at one of those a's with the little circles on top...) Enjoy! :-)

Journal Entry 16 by Hobitten from Odense, Fyns Amt Denmark on Monday, August 15, 2005
Arrived safely today. Very well wrapped and in good condition. I look forward to it. By the way, mlbish: You did very well on the å (a with a little circle on top). It was perfect. One could think you'd be Danish...
Does it really take more than a month for a parcel to travel from US to Denmark? Postmark July 6th, arrived august 15th???

Journal Entry 17 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Sunday, September 4, 2005
I really enjoyed it. To be able to creep inside the head of a Asperger's syndrome patient. As a decidedlyd non-mathematic person, I found it very interesting how Christopher tries to cope with the world - using math. On to the next in line: lilmisstypo in Canada - or is it California?
