If you're interested in learning more about the culture of Indians of the Southwest, and would like to enjoy a good mystery at the same time, this book is for you. You don't have to have read Hillerman's earlier novels to enjoy this one, though it wouldn't hurt. He brings 2 characters from his separate-but-similar series together in this novel. They're both Amerindian police detectives, one retired and the other still fairly young. Both are interesting characters, and Hillerman writes well.
