I avoided reading this book for the longest time - a story of people trapped in cruel relationships, set in small town Wisconsin. Reviewers praised, but used terms like "stifling world of guilt and pain," "tormented souls," "rigid, exacting and angry God," and "brilliant, bitter." Finally I tackled it, calmed myself when I wanted to shake the young mother for not just getting herself OUT of there, and decided if you can hang in till the end, it's probably worth the read. Forget it if you're already depressed.
