"Nothing much happens to me now, nor ever will again. But that should not prevent me from trying to write about it. I cannot help but feel that there is something important about this nothingness" (excerpt taken from page 3)

An intelligent and honest journey of self discovery. You can try to escape your past,or even yourself, it will follow you everywhere, until you come to terms with it.

Drabble's slow, easy style and Candida's cold analysis of "facts" and lack of emotion illustrate the process of change itself. When Candida allows herself to feel, by attempting to see herself through her daughter's eyes, she begins to believe that her life may not be totally in vain. "I am filled with expectation. What is it that is calling me?" (excerpt from page 307)

I found the book on a park bench. It sat on my table for quite a while, and I finally got around to reading it. It really gets into the life of the protagonist, a middle aged woman, and her need to get something more out of her life, post divorce. She is somewhat confused, but courageous. I enjoyed the book because, being male, it gave me a new insight into the mind of a woman.
