This wasnt the best book ever written. However...the ending packs a real punch. I am going to offer it up as a ray, because I want to hear others comments....

Two girls vanish days before Christmas. The Detective who is on the case had a twin sister disappear fifteen years ago in similar circumstances.

The ending to this book gave me chills. I still think about it every so often, and...ohhhh....goosebumps.

Journal Entry 5 by octoberskye from Brighton, Massachusetts USA on Thursday, August 26, 2004
This ending was one of the biggest surprises I've had from a book lately! Parts of the book dragged but a lot of the sections were nightmarish and haunting and the ending was awesome!!

The book traveled with me to Maine and it's a good thing. I was stuck in my room at an inn with no tv in the pouring rain so I got a huge chunk of it read.

It's on its way to 'vivdripper' in Quincy, MA.

Sent to 'vivdripper' in Quincy, MA. She is #2 in the book ray. Enjoy!!!!

This was just what I needed. It was a good read that held my interest and kept me guessing and thinking until the end. What more could I have wanted from this genre? Thanks very much Wizardsheart for making a ring of this book. I'll be sending this out shortly to Rrrcaron.

Rec'd this bookring today. I'll be starting it within a day or two.

Journal Entry 12 by awakeagain from Port Murray, New Jersey USA on Saturday, December 4, 2004
Although I genuinely like this kind of book, my reason for joining the ring was the mention of a twist at the ending. I found myself devouring the book. It reminded me a bit of one of those shows on TV that trace a story in real time. The hours after the two little girls are kidnapped are ticking away and there is the knowledge that they will be dead soon unless someone can figure out where they might be and/or who might have taken them.

The girls themselves are terrific. There's Gwen, the rich privileged child who starts off seeming a non-entity but grows and develops along with the book. And Sadie, she's a treasure to meet. A Sadie as a daughter would be a rare treasure and just as rare (I think) would be the parents who recognized her quality.

I admit I was totally taken aback by the twist at the end. It reminded me of seeing The Sixth Sense for the first time. If you haven't seen it, I won't say more; if you have seen it, you probably know what I mean...you find yourself thinking back and trying to remember what might have given a clue had you been more astute.

The writing isn't the best in the world but the story stands above it.

Mailing off to Shpriz1 in a day or so.

Wow...The ending certainly surprised me. I was wondering what the other bookcrossers meant when they were mentioning "The Sixth Sense". I really loved Sadie.
Thank you for sharing.

Journal Entry 18 by Lpree from Omaha, Nebraska USA on Sunday, January 23, 2005
I finished this book this morning. A very cool story, and I too was surprised by the twist at the ending. I had to read that part a couple of times before it sank in as to what really happened. Wierd...

Anyway, I will PM the next person on the list and will mail it out sometime this week.

thanks very much to wizardsheart for introducing this book to me! I might have to look for other books by this author...

Journal Entry 19 by Chapopote from Falls Church, Virginia USA on Friday, February 11, 2005
Received today in the mail. I will start right away as I just finished my latest book. I'll journal when finished.

Journal Entry 20 by Chapopote from Falls Church, Virginia USA on Saturday, February 19, 2005
I finished the book last night, staying up late to complete it. All in all, an interesting read. The animal cruelty bothered me a bit, but I thought the human characters were pretty well developed.

At times I found it hard to keep straight the individual sub-stories of the characters that were weaved throughout the book, and I found myself re-reading certain parts just to make sure I understood what was going on.

The ending definately had a twist, but I have a question involving the time period just prior to the ending, when they were closing in on the perpetrator. So, if anyone in the ring who has already read this book can PM me, I'll ask my question and see if he/she can answer it.

Thanks for the opportunity to join the ring/ray. I have PM'ed the next person on the list for an address.

Journal Entry 21 by SCRAM33 from Wilmington, North Carolina USA on Tuesday, March 1, 2005
Hey! I forgot about this one so what a pleasant surprise it was to get this in the mail yesterday. Will read, review and send on ASAP!

Journal Entry 22 by SCRAM33 from Wilmington, North Carolina USA on Friday, March 4, 2005
I was completely engrossed for about the first 150 pages. I couldn't put it down. I started to get a bit put off in the middle when the author began to introduce several "weird" characters in the middle that led me to figure out too easily who was probably behind the kidnapping and what was probably going to be a red herring. I did love Sadie and Sadie's mother. I can honestly say she's been one of my favorite child characters in a book in years.
****SPOILER ALERT*** DON'T READ ANY FURTHER UNTIL YOU READ THE BOOK!!!! Highlight to read:
Please don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this book but I had a few beefs with it. Mainly my problems with this book are:(Ok, so I'm pretty picky) #1 Ali had personal experience with the killer. I realize she was sensitive about her scar and "betraying" her friend, but as a professional part of the team helping the FBI and the police did she not think that she should tell someone so that if there was anything at all she could tell them about the guy ie height, weight, build, male or female they could begin to build a profile? Considering the torture she endured, I can't imagine SOMETHING wouldn't stick out in her memory. Also, how in the WORLD could she have let the priest sit in jail all those years knowing he probably didn't do it and could prove it since the killer threw her in the ditch at a certain time and place and his whereabouts could have probably been proven. #2 The introduction of the weird guys (the Penny brothers & Mortimer Cray) They were so obviously twisted and awkwardly put in that it was obvious that at least one of them knew what was going on and that one of them did it. #3 What was the deal with the shadow living beneath the priest's cot in his cell? I love supernatural twists and I loved the twist ending with Sadie, but I could not figure out what the shadow thing was all about. #4 The ransom stuff was also unnecessary. I guess I was so anxious to see the girls get saved that it annoyed me when the investigators stopped to investigate Oz Almo even though they knew that the Gwen was set to be killed at any moment.

Off to Brewster13. Thanks for sharing!

This arrived in my mail box today. I have been awaiting my turn with this book, as the reviews / comments have me very much wondering what it will hold for me.

It will have to wait a few days until I'm finished my current book though. I will post when I begin reading.

This book was indeed pretty run-of-the-mill. I agree with much of what scram33 wrote (I won't insert any more spoilers ... it was hard enough for me not to read those ones prior to finishing the book - I don't want to tempt anyone else :-D ). The logic in some of the characters and their decisions did not hold up for me, and I found myself distracted by that at times while reading. I did like the twist at the ending - although some other parts of the ending I found lacking. But I'm glad to have had the chance to read this book -- thanks for the bookring.

I'll put this in the mail soon ... hopefully later this week. Brewster13

I just got Judas Child today. I'm going to start reading it tonight, and I can't wait, it looks great!

Journal Entry 27 by Schwexxy from Sylvan Lake, Alberta Canada on Thursday, July 14, 2005
Wow, I'm finally finished! I had a really hard time getting through this book. It is very exciting and fast paced, but I was so confused about what was going on. I'm still not sure who the "bad guy" was, but I won't say any more because I don't want to give anything away. I agree that it is definatly not the best book ever written, but it does have it's good qualities. The story was fantastic, but it could have been written better. I'll send this book off right away.

Journal Entry 28 by Miss-R from Southend-on-Sea, Essex United Kingdom on Friday, October 14, 2005
Thanks for sending this! I'll try and read it as soon as I can, but I'm moving house soon so I may be a bit distracted at times. PM me to give me a nudge if you think I've had it too long!

Journal Entry 29 by Miss-R from Southend-on-Sea, Essex United Kingdom on Sunday, October 23, 2005
I didn't enjoy this at all. There were too many characters to keep track of, it was not written very well at all, and when I got to the twist at the end I just thought 'is that it?' It could have been so much better. I'll pass this on as soon as I get MishkaBlue's address. I hope everyone else yet to read this enjoys it more than I did.

Journal Entry 30 by Miss-R from Southend-on-Sea, Essex United Kingdom on Tuesday, April 18, 2006
I still have this book, as I have Pmed the last 2 people on the list several times and not had an answer. I don't know if the PM's are getting through, which is why I'm leaving a journal entry (rather than a PM) to ask what should I do with the book now? Can I wild release it or do you want me to carry on trying with the PMs?

Journal Entry 31 by platypussj from Colchester, Essex United Kingdom on Sunday, October 1, 2006
I can't remember how long I've had this book, and I thought that I had plucked it from a bookbox - wrong again!!

I found this to be, on the whole, a jolly good yarn. The sort of book to sink into with a large mug of chocolate in front of a raging fire with wind and rain lashing the windows. I did have some issues with the writing and the plot though, and to be honest I didn't actually like the ending - I can't say much more without spoiling it for other readers - as a film ending I think it would work but as a book ending I did consider it to be something of a cop-out!! Despite this I would like to read more of Carol O'Connell's stuff, I like her characterisation.

Thank you very much for sharing wizardsheart.
