Drats!! Found more garage sale books that I just couldn't leave behind. Ok, I could have, but I didn't! Anyway, picked these up at a bargain price and couldn't resist. Adding to the TBR list. This one in particular was a good find today since it was on my wish list!! Yay!

It took a while to get used to the writing of Frank McCourt, he doesn't use quotes or comma's in places you would expect. An amazing account of Frank McCourt's childhood, the hardships his family faced and his ability to overcome. This one will make you cry, make you laugh, and make you ever so grateful no matter how bad the day is, that we are so blessed. An exerpt from the book, "I don't know what it means and I don't care because it's Shakespeare and it's like having jewels in my mouth when I say the words." As said by Frank McCourt while reading Shakespeare poetry in the hospital. I really look forward to reading the sequel, 'Tis.

"Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood," writes Frank McCourt in Angela's Ashes. "Worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." Welcome, then, to the pinnacle of the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1930 to recent Irish immigrants Malachy and Angela McCourt, Frank grew up in Limerick after his parents returned to Ireland because of poor prospects in America. It turns out that prospects weren't so great back in the old country either--not with Malachy for a father. A chronically unemployed and nearly unemployable alcoholic, he appears to be the model on which many of our more insulting cliches about drunken Irish manhood are based. Mix in abject poverty and frequent death and illness and you have all the makings of a truly difficult early life. Fortunately, in McCourt's able hands it also has all the makings for a compelling memoir.

1999 movie. Watched the movie 5/6/07. While the movie does live up to the book, it did not have the same impact on me as the book did. The movies seldom ever do. But, I still enjoyed watching the book come to life.

Reserving for BJ

I was moved to tears and at other times laughed out loud while reading this book. It was a bitter-sweet experience for me. Can't wait to read the sequel, "Tis". My friend, Diane, loaned me the book to read and now I will return it to her so she can set it free again. Would love to get my hands on the book, "Tis". Frank McCourt is a wonderful writer and very deserving of the Pulitzer Prize. I read the book in 2 weeks and could not put it down at times. He writes so simply as a child thinks but leaves you with a powerful message. Thank God he survived his childhood and was able to put into words the painful but moving experiences of his life.
