I would describe "Sense and Sensibility" as an engaging and hopelessly romantic story. The most prominent feeling throughout the the book is estrangement. However, I have the impression that I found it more depressing than most other people who've read it. It jumps from one love triangle to the next, entangling them in a mess of early 19th century British society.

The main characters are well developed, and there is constantly some underlying conflict that makes it very difficult to put the book down. I read it pretty much straight through, only pausing the story when absolutely necessary.

It focuses entirely on relationships. There is little mentioned of politics, philosophy, or intellectual pursuits, as Austen rarely deviates from her classic theme of unrequited love.

I cannot say whether the ending was predictable or not. I had a good idea of how things would turn out, but as I read, there was always some faint doubt that made me afraid things might not turn out as I thought they should. That slight doubt made me read through the story with even more eagerness. In fact, at some times it seemed impossible that the story could end well, without leaving some crestfallen lover abandoned.

The end, I thought, was satisfying. However, small but significant details I still found unresolved. Overall, it is an excellent novel, well worth reading.

Found the book in Florence Italy, while taking shelter from the rain. I plan to read it as soon as I finish the book I am currently reading. I took it with me back to Havirov in The Czech Republic, where I am currently living with my wife. I will likely release it here... but only time will tell!

Released on Thursday, September 05, 2002 at Permon center in phone booth in Havirov, Moravia Czech Republic.
