Journal Entry 1 by Eucalia from Issaquah, Washington USA on Thursday, July 29, 2004
My mom gave this book to me to read, but it looks it'll be a while before I can get to it so I'll see if anyone is interested in a bookring with this book first.

Journal Entry 2 by Eucalia from Issaquah, Washington USA on Friday, July 30, 2004
This book is now part of a bookring!

This bookring is completed.
The following is the list of members.

1. LPree (MD) (anywhere)
2. mysteryfan03 (MO) (anywhere)
3. terpsicore (Portugal) (anywhere)
4. mitziyah (WA) (US pref)
5. surfenkitten (NJ) (US pref)
6. Kyrissaean (NH) (anywhere)
7. Luintaurien (NB) (US/CAN pref)

A bookring is when a book is sent from one person to another through a list of members who have signed up for it and eventually ends up safe and sound back home with the person who started the bookring—me!

Here are the guidelines for this bookring:

1. When the person before you on the list is done reading the book they will send you a personal message (PM) asking you for your address. If you feel that you are too busy at that time to read the book within a reasonable time period (about 1 month), ask that person to skip you and go to the next person on the list. If this happens, PM me to let me know what’s going on and, if you want, I may be able to move you down the list so you can try again later.

2. When you receive the book, make a journal entry letting everyone know where the book is. Keep in mind that there are other people waiting to read the book after you, so try not to take too long to read it. A general rule of thumb is to have the book in your possession for no longer than one month. If you know you won’t be able to get to the book within a month, pass it on to the next person on the list, PM me letting me know, and I can move you down the list so you can try again later if you’d like. If you’re reading the book and it’s taking you longer than expected to finish, make a journal entry letting everyone know! Remember, there’s no such thing as too many journal entries.

3. When you’re done (or almost done) reading the book, send a PM to the next person on the list asking for their address. Even if you think you already know that person’s address, it’s a good idea to double-check to make sure their address hasn’t changed—and also make sure the list order hasn’t changed since you checked it last. If the next person on the list doesn’t respond to your PM within several days, try again. If you still get no response within one week, PM me to let me know what’s going on and then skip this person and try the next person on the list.

4. After you’ve finished the book, journal a quick review of it for us letting us know what you thought of it!

5. Send the book to the next person on the list and post a journal entry letting everyone know it’s on its way. Sit back, relax, and watch the journals as the book completes its journey!

This arrived in today's mail. I have a couple other bookrings ahead of it, but will get to it as soon as I can and will keep an eye on how long I'm holding it for. I'm looking forward to reading it!

UPDATE 8/26 - I started this last night and hope to finish it over the weekend.

Journal Entry 5 by Lpree from Omaha, Nebraska USA on Saturday, August 28, 2004
Okay, I've heard a lot of good things about Amy Tan, but unfortunately, I just could not get into this book. The constant switching of narrators kept throwing me off, and I just couldn't get involved in the story. Maybe another time, I'll try this again.... Thanks for the opportunity to check out this book, though!

I'll PM the next person in line and hope to mail this out in the next few days.

UPDATE 8/28 - mysteryfan03 has asked to be skipped. I have PMd terpsicore for an address.

UPDATE 9/2 - Sent surface mail to terpsicore today.

I loved this book!I think it's my Amy Tan's favorite so far.It reminded me of a native american proverb that says:if you don't know where you're going, then look where you came from.
And even not being a mystical person, the surreal bits did not annoy me at all,I really got caught in it.

Journal Entry 8 by terpsicore from Algés, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Friday, January 14, 2005
mailed today to mitziyah by surface mail

Journal Entry 9 by mitziyah from Seattle, Washington USA on Thursday, February 10, 2005
Arrived yesterday. Woohoo!! (Proving once again that surface mail from Europe to the States tends to be WEEKS faster than surface mail from the States to Europe. Ah well. I'm glad this book got to spend some time in Lisboa...one of my all time favorite cities!!). I need to finish my current book and read one more ring before this...but it shouldn't take too long.

I'm very excited to visit the world of Amy Tan again. It's been years since I've read something of hers, but I've always been a fan of her poetic prose and story-telling style. Thanks for the bookring.

Journal Entry 10 by mitziyah from Seattle, Washington USA on Sunday, February 13, 2005
This book was amazing. I finished it in only two days, and I don't regret the sleep I sacrificed. This was beautiful. It was so entertaining, and interesting, and unexpected. I was continually surprised and delighted and saddened and joyous as I turned the pages. The character of Kwan is truly one of the most interesting I've ever encountered. What a delightful journey. Having not read anything by Amy Tan in 10 years (I can't believe that my freshman year of high school was TEN YEARS ago. Ack!!) I'd forgotten just how POWERFUL a writer she is. Thanks ever so much for creating this bookring. My dreams have been saturated with the world of yin these last two nights, and I don't imagine these images will be leaving any time soon.

Sent a PM to the next recipient and will mail this once I receive their address.

Journal Entry 11 by surfenkitten from Audubon, New Jersey USA on Thursday, February 24, 2005
can't believe i forgot to journal this! i really liked it a lot. the main character seemed a bit whiny at times but i loved Kwan! so funny. what a neat idea, too, that we're all connected throughout time. i think i'd need to read it again to really figure out what's going on though!

thanks Eucalia for sharing!

Journal Entry 12 by Kyrissaean from Littleton, New Hampshire USA on Friday, April 22, 2005
It's here! This book sounds really good! I've got a couple other bookrings in the house (why do they always come in clumps?!), but I'll get to this as soon as I can. :)

Journal Entry 13 by Kyrissaean from Littleton, New Hampshire USA on Tuesday, May 3, 2005
This was lovely! I agree with surfkitten -- the main character, Olivia, seemed to spend most of her life looking for reasons to mope and feel sorry for herself, which kind of got on my nerves. I couldn't believe how intolerant she was of Kwan! Kwan was fabulous. I would love to have a friend or a sister like her -- life would never be boring! She was just so well written, so complete as a character, that she seemed real, even with her yin eyes. I feel like I should be able to look up her family in San Francisco. And if I did, see if she could ask around in the World of Yin and find out about my past lives (I bet she'd tell me I used to like Chinese food)....

Thanks so much for including me in this ring!
