I finally got around to starting to read this book, but I'm afraid I didn't stick with it to the end. At first I liked it and I thought it was brilliantly written: here was someone who knew exactly what went on in the mind of a bullied child. However, the more I read the more it depressed me and I began to find the style of writing, short simple sentences, became like a monotonous tune in the background. I was somewhat curious to know how the story developed, but I decided that as I really wasn't enjoying it, it was silly to carry on with it.
Perhaps it would have been better had I not recognized so much of myself in the young Elaine. Margaret Atwood is an acclaimed writer and I am sure there are many who will really appreciate this book as I could not.

thanks Jalna - I've read and very much enjoyed three or four of Margaret Atwood's before, but not this one. Her style seems to change greatly from one book to the next so I'm curious to find out if I will succeed with this one where you did not!
This has been sitting on my shelf for far too long and I've not been able to get into it at all. Time to send it off on its travels to see if it can find a home with someone who will enjoy it!
