Journal Entry 7 by nekki2976 from Mumford, New York USA on Thursday, August 5, 2004
I finished this last night at about 2:15 in the morning. I figured that's what would happen. I've had all day to think about what to write, and I still can't formulate enough ways to say that it's a great book!

It took me only 3 sittings to read (the first 2 breaks were due to my daughters' needs : D ). What can I say without spoiling?????

I was hooked when Tessa joined Melissa on the boat and after. I couldn't put it down after Uncle George's house was passed on to its rightful owner (about 50 pages into a 200ish-page book). The twists and curves in the storyline were great! I have a feeling that some people may say they're predictable, but for someone who can't see a twist until it's hitting me smack in the face, I liked them all. I loved the slight spirituality to it. I loved the family atmosphere that Tessa created everywhere.

I only have 3 wishes:
1. Those times when Tessa gets so angry that her Irish brogue takes over, I wish they were written with some of the dialect so I could "hear" her saying them -- much like I could "hear" her sometimes with the typically Irish idioms that are sprinkled throughout.

2. That Margaret's second book comes out soon, and I get to read that.

3. That I find this at a bookstore soon so that I can own it.

My husband picked this up this morning, has been reading it most of the day, and expects to be done tonight. Perhaps I'll convince him to register at BC, and this will be his first book to jouranl.

I expect to send this on to Phillycarol as soon as I get her address/PM response.

I hope you enjoy!

Journal Entry 9 by phillycarol from King Of Prussia, Pennsylvania USA on Monday, August 16, 2004
Received in the mail today. Barely made it in a torn envelope but it's here! The upper left corner is a little bent though. It's next on my TBR list.

Journal Entry 10 by phillycarol from King Of Prussia, Pennsylvania USA on Tuesday, August 24, 2004
Overall, I enjoyed the story of Tess and her legacy. At times the book was a little predictable but there were some unexpected twists (that I don't want to reveal here). I found that some descriptions were repetitive, like how Tess liked making soap and how Tess loved wearing women's clothes. The descriptions were good to read once, but twice was too much.

I think that I was definitely a more critical reader of this book knowing that the author would see my comments. Normally, I would have breezed through the book and said that it was a good, light read. Now I would say that this was a good start for Margaret Hodapp and I'm looking forward to reading her next book.

I'll mail the book to Lorit5 as soon as I get her address. Thanks for sharing it, Margaret!

I really enjoyed reading this book. The little twists in different areas may have been predictable but I like the way they played out. Thank you for sharing this with me.

I really enjoyed this book. I think Tessa showed great courage in all that she did, and I'm very happy with how it all turned out for her. Margaret Hodapp did a wonderful job writing this novel, and I look forward to her next book!Waiting to hear from Mysteryfan03 so I can send it on. Thanks so much for sharing your novel with us Margaret!

This is not a book that I would usually pick up. I had a hard time getting into it, but then all of a sudden, I was starting chapter 2 and was hooked. I loved the story and was glad that it continued after the first problems of Tessa were solved. I liked the idea of an older heroine, who falls in love, (NOT with the first man that she argues with, like so many books)is very independent, and has lots of love to share. I also like it that the romance was not the main theme of the book. I enjoyed most all of the characters, the author made them come alive for me.

I will look for a copy of this book to buy and release. Thank you so much, mardapp, for letting us read this book.

Ironically, my next bookring book is also a bookcrosser author, Wolfpointe, by ArJohn (Rick Buda) Hope that I like it as much as this one!

Update--Goldilocks was not answering PMs (she/he has no stats at all on their profile) I mailed this on to Starfish today!

Oh my gosh I can not believe I read the book so fast, I only started on Monday. I am naturally a slow reader, but it was so catching. I must admit that a few of the goings on were predictable, but that’s ok, it makes me feel smart. I like to read stories about strong willed women, and I also like ‘coming to America’ tales, and this had both. Thank you so much for sharing.

I liked this a lot! There were a few spots where I really wanted more than I got - more details about things. I felt like I was bring rushed out of a room before I got to look around as much as I wanted to and the like. I also would have liked a little more of a chance to come to my own conclusions as to what people felt, and what was behind their actions. But those two things are the worst I can say about it. A good book... I'll get busy on passing it along to the next person right away... sorry I held up the book so long...

I signed up for this book ring so long ago that I had forgotten all about it until it arrived today. Thankfully, it was forwarded to my new address (I moved a week ago). I'll post more comments after I've had a chance to read it, but I have to say that the back cover makes it sound really intriguing. :)

Journal Entry 22 by Reprieve26 from North Bend, Oregon USA on Sunday, September 11, 2005
I just finished reading the book a few minutes ago. I like that for once I can make comments about a book directly to its author. I found the storyline to be intriguing and I loved many of the different characters, but I found that the book tends to drag in a few places. I liked the details about Tessa's way of life-- the way she prepared and preserved food, etc-- but at times the paragraphs of detail distracted from the plot of the story. Also, there were several redundancies, typos, and discrepencies scattered throughout the book that I found distracting. I hope that I don't sound too harsh. Overall, the book was a good read, but these were things that the author could work on to make her next novel even better.

I'd like to congratulate the author for succeeding in writing a full length novel and getting it published. Like Tess, she chose to take a chance and try something new-- and for that I admire her.

I have messaged the next person on the list and am waiting for their address to mail the book to them.

I finished reading the book last night before I went to bed. I loved it!! Very quick read (it only took me 2 days to read it!!). I found it hard to put down though there were a couple of parts that were a little repetitive.

This arrived from Germany while I was away on holiday, so it may take me a bit longer to read and send it, but I'll try to get it off to Susan quickly. I look forward to being able to give feedback directly to the author. Thanks!

Journal Entry 29 by wingpenelopewanderswing from Saint-Loup-des Vignes, Centre France on Monday, May 1, 2006
I enjoyed this story... there were parts which I felt moved too swiftly. The relationship between the heroine and her love interest moves from zero to an engagement ring in very few encounters, for example, and I felt the evilness of Charles could have been developed more - it seemed that something was started there and then dropped. At the end of the day, he wasn't such a bad guy, or at least he never actually does anything bad other than creep into a house where he's not supposed to be... lots of suspense building up to nothing. But the plot was good, with lots of unexpected twists. Thank you so much for sharing this book. This ring travels to the UK after me.

RELEASE NOTES:

This book ring is now on its way from Switzerland to the UK... it is being hand carried and will either be hand delivered or posted once in London. Enjoy!

holy cow... this is a first!
A Book registered by its author! and travelled across so many stations already... I guess that explains the somewhat used look.
Thank you for putting it in my Women's Lit Book Box and therefore sharing it with me. Will be part of my own private Mount TBR for the duration. As it's in a nice format for cross-trainer-reading at my health club I'm sure I'll read it soon. Let's hope it shortens my hour of work out.
Cheers!

back cover:
During the late seventeen hundreds, Tessa O’Donnell’s husband is attacked and killed by thieves as he returns home one evening, drunk, from the local pub in their small Irish village. Tessa, secretly relieved to be rid of her abusive husband, sorts through his meager belongings after the dreary funeral and finds a small, concealed box. Tessa is amazed to discover a boarding ticket and a small amount of cash inside the locked box. Furious, she realizes that her husband had plans to desert her and sail alone on a ship bound for America. Tessa is frightened to leave her familiar surroundings in Ireland but is determined to seek a better life for herself. She bravely uses the ticket and boards the huge ship to journey to America. A fascinating new friend whom Tessa meets aboard ship has an important influence on her life. Upon her arrival in America, a curious twist of fate and a conversation with a ghost draws Tessa deep into a daring adventure. The lonely widow attempts to unravel a series of confusing and puzzling clues in the exciting months following her arrival to search for a hidden legacy, unsure if the discovery will bring her happiness or more heartbreak.

Journal Entry 36 by Annadlx from Wiesbaden, Hessen Germany on Tuesday, June 3, 2008
Awww... I guess I'll be the first one to say that I did not like this story or the style of writing. I feel the need to be honest and tell it like it is. I'm sorry for it.
The characters were not really believable and nobody that I would like to meet. The storyline moves too quickly in some parts and too slowly in others. And I couldn't fight the ever present feeling of knowing what would come. I usually do when reading romance but here it was like I knew what the next sentence would be and how the chapter would end. There were no real surprises. Even the lovestory developed way too quickly for my liking. But that is usually the case. ;)

I'm sorry for keeping the book so long on my shelf, but I had to bring myself to pick it up. Maybe that is also part of the reason why I didn't enjoy it as much as all of you.
The book will be offered at the next Mainz Meetup at the end of June. There are going to be some romance readers that might get a thrill out of reading a "First". -> The status is reserved.

I took this book because the author's family name is kind of famous in my profession: VOLKER Hodapp is a great scientist in Psychology. Later I found that this book started its tour around the world really by its "Mother"...

Journal Entry 38 by jokey from Harxheim, Rheinland-Pfalz Germany on Wednesday, August 27, 2008
very agreable to read! tessa is a powerfull woman with good luck. i just wonder whether the story is - at least partly - based on reality.
i looked very much forward reading the book because the author's family name is the same as one leading professor's of these days (volker hodapp) who is a near colleague/friend of my former boss at university.
24.01.09: I try to use this book as an appetizer to a group of women who I met recently - and all are book-lovers. We will see what the future shows!
