After reading "Timbuktu" I added Auster to my list of favourite writers, so I was eager to read this new book as well.
It certainly is a good read, well written, cleverly constructed and carefully build up. However, in the end it left me with the feeling that I should think that it was really good, when in fact I felt somewhat unsatisfied. Difficult to put my finger on the reason, maybe it was a bit too wel constructed to my taste.
"Timbuktu" will remain part of my permanent collection, but this one I will part with.

Thanks eMeReS - the book arrived this morning. I've been wanting to read this for a while. I'm tempted to save it for my holiday in September. But suspect I'll not be patient enough and will read it before then!

I liked this book a lot - far, far better than New York Trilogy. This time I was caught up in the story and the characters (especially Hector) so much that I only noticed Auster's trickery once I was caught up in it. The whole book was tinged with a sadness though.

While reading this book I was working on a project looking at what photography means to people and there were all kinds of parallels. I found myself getting quite melancholy thinking about how we make sense of our lives and what our legacies mean both to ourselves and to others.

The book travelled back to the Netherlands again as I spent yesterday in sunny Amsterdam! Thanks for sharing eMeReS.

I really enjoyed this book. Both the fact that it was about an unusual subject and also the interesting plot and characters. I will definitely read more by this author. I've only read "True Tales of American Life" which he edited, but didn't write. Will be interesting to see what I think of the books the other journals have read by him. Thanks very much for sharing skribble.

Well constructed and written book but I felt rather uninvolved with it. Too much sadness for me,I think.
