This 2001 novel tells the story of twenty-something year old Zoë, who lives alone with her widowed and introverted mother in a flat in London. When Zoë's mother unexpectedly re-marries, to an older gentleman called Simon, the couple move to Simon's home in the south of France. Zoë begins a life of cross-channel shuffling from London to Nice, and lives lives - as does her mother - off Simon's largesse. Neither woman needs to work at anything more than the occasional editing job, so life gets a little empty, until a crisis occurs.

The Bay of Angels reminded me very much of Jean Rhys's After Leaving Mr. McKenzie. I felt impatient with the female characters (especially since the book seems to be set in more contemporary times), and astonished at the existential slack they allowed from their lives. Simon's fall (not a secret, as this information is conveyed on the back cover of the book) casts them psychically adrift, a free-fall from which they only barely recover, and only temporarily. I don't know women like this. Maybe I'm lucky.
