I've picked up a few books at a charity shop sale.
A spare copy of the first of David Gemmell's classic fantasy novels. This introduces Druss the Legend himself, and tells of a desperate siege as an undermanned fortress must hold out against a barbarian horde.
Great storytelling, good characterisation, lots of heroic battle. Marvellous.

I loved this book, it's brilliant. I often find difficulty following books that war/battle driven plots - I find them complicated. But this book is beautifully written with characters that jump off the page. There is much too, that is thought provoking, emotive and tender. I would be very keen to read others in this series.

Thank you so much londonmet, for sharing this wonderful book.

I hang my head in shame for not having posted earlier - not on its way to acanthium32

Oops - sorry, was logged in as my 10 year old son before, who wouldn't appreciate this at all at his age!

*I'm* looking forward to reading it!

Excellent book as promised! Well written, plenty of axe wielding(!) Read whilst suffering with Mumps and went well with the rather surreal place I was occupying due to copious pain killers!

Hard to believe this is a genre I hadn't/wouldn't touch less than a year ago. Will look out for more by Gemmell once Mount Toobie stops groaning quite so much.

I am a bit confused as to who is next in line for it though?! Let me know and it will be on it's way :o)

Received safe and well today, in a fantastic, penguin-adorned Jiffy bag. I'm almost finished my book so will begin 'Legend' by the end of the week. I look forward to it!

Many thanks.

I really enjoyed this - a great story with interesting characters. It makes a change from the old fantasy quest formula, I think, because the central character has a high opinion of himself and is just going with the flow rather than searching for his destiny, etc., etc. Loved the battle scenes and the on-the-edge-of-the-seat drama.

I'll definitely search for more Gemmell titles. Thank you to Londonmet for sharing and starting me off on a new (to me) Fantasy author.

Off to Butternut tomorrow.

I sort of forgot I was on this bookring, so this is actually the second time this year I've read this book. However, I think I actually liked the book better the second time. Actually, I think I appreciated the shear bloody minded determination more this time.

Mailed 8/6.

Legend is my first exposure to the work of David Gemmell, although I have been wanting to read something by him for a long time. I have had several people tell me that his books are great, and they were right.

Legend is one of those rare works of fantasy that creates a thoroughly believable world, complete with fully developed, likeable characters, and manages to check in at less than 750 pages. It is refreshing to be able to enjoy a story like this and not have to commit a ton of time to it. Rek, Druss, Hogun, and all the rest come alive, and Gemmell's descriptions of battle are extremely readable. I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.

Thanks to londonmet for including me in this bookray. My apologies for taking so long with it. This book is off to elmindreda this week.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Will start reading right after exams!

A friend of mine recommended this book, so maybe this is why my expectations were too high. To be honest, I didn't like it that much. The beggining starts like almost every RPG I heard of or took part in (character introductions in a tavern), the Virae part was way too rushed for me, and the ending was a 'little' too much. Good thing there was a middle part, which made the book interesting! The battle sequences were well written, and I enjoyed Rek's and Druss' character. The Thirty was interesting as well. All in all, I'll give it a 5 out of 10. (just wasn't in the right mood I guess..)

Sending it off to xula in Spain tomorrow!
