This is a collection of short stories. It's vintage Irvine Welsh and I guess if you like his stuff you'll like this. It's certainly brilliantly written but I always find with his books that all the characters are interested in is taking as many hard drugs as possible and I therefore have a very hard time finding them at all interesting.

Got it yesterday, thanks RACKYROSS and don't worry I'll put the BCID label on the inside cover. One more to read before I start on this one.

Journal Entry 9 by kizmiaz from Belém , Lisboa (cidade) Portugal on Tuesday, December 27, 2005
This is quite a selection of short stories, raw, rude and life like. Even if the main subject of most of the stories is a very serious one, drugs and ways to enjoy them, I found myself smiling and laughing out loud often by the way that they're told.
Not all the stories are awesome, some are just great and others not so good. The ones I enjoyed the most were: "Eurotrash", "Stoke Newington Blues", "The Last Resort On the Adriatic", "Sexual Disaster Quartet", "Snuff" and although I loved the idea behind "Where the Debris Meets the Sea" I thought it turns out quite poor.
But my top pick goes to "Granny's Old Junk" and "A Smart Cunt", these are really over the top.
The way the characters lead their lives is very realistic and european, especially small, developing european countries where chances at real life dwindle every day.
This was a very enjoyable read, but there were a couple of stories that ah jist couldn't get inta becoose of tha thick accent that tha narrator uses, ya ken?
Sending it to Germany today.

Now why should anybody take drugs if they can read books like this one instead? With the single exception of the title story (which is just a wee bit too weird even for me), I enjoyed each and every one of them. They're brilliantly written, witty, extremely vivid and bursting of excellent ideas. Some of my personal favorites (although it's hard to pick them out of this gorgeous stuff) are Eurotrash, The Last Resort on the Adriatic, A Blockage in the System, Granny's Old Junk, The House of John Deaf, and Lisa's Mum Meets the Queen Mum, which is just another example for them not all being about bevvy 'n drugs. And then, of course, the masterpiece: A Smart Cunt. The hero just can't cope with the loss of his mother and his girlfriend, and instead of trying to make some sense out of his loveless life, he takes refuge to drugs and reading biographies. Best book I've read so far this year.

Yes, in spite of all, I'd maybe give Garland a bell. London had been starting to feel like Edinburgh had before I'd left it. Gleaves, May, even Darren, Avril, Cliff, Sandra and Gerard; they all constituted a set of expectations which snapped around me like a sprung trap. You can only be free for so long, then the chains start to bind you. The answer is to keep moving.

Off to melanthy by snailmail, enjoy!

BOOK RING!A wonderfull way to read one of the best writer of our time.

Journal Entry 13 by inngrid on Tuesday, March 7, 2006
Received, thank you Melanthy and RACKYROSS! I have a significant number of TBR books already, but I will do my best...

Journal Entry 14 by inngrid on Sunday, May 21, 2006
I enjoyed this book. A bit difficult to read, though, because my english isn't perfect, let alone my scottish (I couldn't help smiling when reading kizmiaz'JE)!

These short stories and novels describe a squalid universe that made me feel uneasy sometimes, but with great humor, intelligence and creativity. Also, Irvine provides a very moving abundance of details when it is about drug taking.

I read Trainspotting in French years ago, and I didn't like as much as these stories... Maybe it is the short story format, or maybe the language.

Thank you for the ray, Rackyross. I will post it to Australia some time this week.

Sent to Jubby on May 27th.

Journal Entry 16 by jubby from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, June 18, 2006
Alright, I will admit that I did not read all of this book, but I read enough (and I have to get it into the post).

'Eurotrash' was by far the best story that I read. It was the first story of his that I have read (and I have read 'Trainspotting', 'Filth', 'Glue' and 'Porno') that I didn't have to speak the text aloug to work out what he was phonetically saying!

I felt that the story didn't need the last twist, that the character of Chrissie was plausible as was, but a well crafted story.

Welsh writes about the seedy, underbelly of the world, one of junkies, alcoholics and violence. One that most of us (hopefully) will not emerge into, but a world that does indeed exist, and deserves to be explored.

The other stories I read were alright, but, nothing new, and felt like they were the earlier experiments for his later works.

Thank you for sharing this book with me.

Journal Entry 19 by verenka from Wien - irgendwo / Vienna - somewhere, Wien Austria on Friday, July 7, 2006
I never really got into the book.
First it was difficult to read because of the bits written in scots. It felt like hours just to read a single page. Besides I didn't care much for most of the stories. A lot of them seemed random and pointless, especially the ones with supernatural storylines thrown in. They were either too carefully crafted and artificial or too random. I don't normally mind the bizarre, but in these stories I found it to be neither original nor funny.
I had my occasional laughs and I liked Eurotrash and most of the Smart Cunt, so I'll give it 6 points.
